On the Road Again

Okay here's a weird one for me.

I have occasionally blogged about music, and those of you who have been around a while may have picked up the fact that I don't really get country music. I do realize there is a lot of different stuff out there, and I don't have anything against it as such. It may even be that I just haven't come across the right kind of country. I mean, if you asked me why I don't like it I could say the chords are too predictable, but then I love blues so that can't be it.

It isn't that I don't like the rhythms. And the sentiments can range from love to politics to cars - no problems there. Piano, Guitars - good; Bass - check; strings, harmonica - fair enough. But in the past it has mostly left me unmoved.

But there is an advert on TV at the moment using Willie Nelson's "on the road again" as its backing track, and it is really starting to grow on me. I love the simple, but clever and slightly unexpected chord changes. I love the wistfulness and hope and companionship in the lyrics and the way the song is put together.

Oh my GOD Dreamer's going country! (It must be the pent up hormones! ) So I wondered..... I know some of you, especially my American friends, love country.......what have I missed? What are the top three songs in your opinion that I should educate myself by listening to? Bear in mind I need something a little inventive musically, and it needs to have some depth. (Actually maybe it doesn't - I think the last country music record that made me smile was Ray Stevens "The Streak" lol! )

Please post me your suggestions....... and I will listen to them.

I'd be surprised if I am going to be either. I am already starting to wonder what on earth I can have been thinking when I wrote this post, after seeing the name "Kenny Rogers" mentioned twice already!

I think I know someone else who is keen on Rascal Flatts, but something tells me it has a lot to do with his looks! But then I kind of like Taylor Swift, so I can understand how that works, lol.

For Garth Brooks see my comment to 4tulsa918. I think I have heard some Charlie Daniels, Reba McEntire also, but I will check out Gretchen Wilson, Toby Keith and Brad Paisley and let you know.

Okay, well as you know, I always tell the truth and give a straight answer, but just because I don't like the same music, doesn't mean I don't like you, okay!?

"The River" by Garth Brooks
This sounds like every other country song I have ever heard, or at least all but the good ones. I knew what the tune and the chords were going to be before he played them even though I had never heard it before. I know he sells more records than anyone, but they must hear something I don't. To me - utterly bland.

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones
Nothing new here, no invention. So boring even he felt it even needed a key change after only the first verse to keep it interesting.

"Go Rest High on that Mountain" by Vince Gill
I almost liked this - he's got a good voice and the slight gospel anthem feel mixed with a bit of celtic folk music influence gives it something interesting.

"The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers
Well of course I had heard this before, but on listening to it again I'm afraid I still don't like it! At least it has a catchy chorus, but the self-help therapy life skills analogy message of the lyrics is pretty painful.

"Long Black Train" by Josh Turner
Nice Video, and I liked the slide dobro guitar and the blue-grass style fiddle playing, plus his extraordinary voice adds something to an otherwise fairly standard country tune. Can't say I loved it though, sorry! His voice did remind me of I guy I really do like though - I suppose it is more folk music than country - Click Horning. He is not that well known, but some of his songs are really beautiful. (To my ears, lol.) I only know about him because a friend of mine knew him years back, but you can get his stuff on line from his website, and there is a not very well recorded live track featuring quite a nice little song there to listen to free at the moment.

Hi Sassi - yes, I do quite like Reba McEntire now I have listened to her, (see my comment to ladysunrise,) but I am afraid Marty Robbins is not for me. I listened to "El Paso City" and "Devil Woman" and I am sorry to say that if I am now asked why I don't like country music I will say "because of him!"

Okay, I have been listening, and here's the verdict:

Reba McEntire
I listened to “The night the lights went out in Georgia,” “Fancy” and “Is there life out there.” I quite like her story book style, and she has a lovely strong voice, nice sparse backing tracks but I realized that the parts I liked best were the bits which sound least like country music, for example the slightly soul/motown feel of the chorus to “the lights went out in Georgia,” so no help there!

Toby Keith
I listened to “As good as I once was” and “I love this bar.” Clever videos and lyrics; if I had to listen to country music I could happily pass the time with this. Maybe because its slightly more rock/blues feel appealed to me, but mainly I think it was the girls in the videos! I liked him too though ‒ he made me smile.

Brad Paisley
“Then” and “Whiskey Lullaby”
I really couldn’t be bothered with “Then.” “Whiskey” was a bit better, but only really because of the nice guitar sound.

Charlie Daniels
Of course I have heard “The Devil went down to Georgia” and to be honest I could bear to hear it again voluntarily, so I went for “Long Haired Country Boy” and after about ten seconds I knew I would have no trouble leaving him alone!

Thanks for the steer, sorry I can't be more positive, lol, but come back and blog here again please!

Hmmm...it is hard to think of any to suggest but here are a few...

"Wild at Heart" by Gloriana--it is just a fun song that always makes me smile and sing a long. The group kind of reminds me of a younger version of Little Big Town.

"Bring It On Home" by Little Big Town--a very sweet (maybe too sweet) song.

And of course anything by Dierks Bentley (I'm sure you could have guessed I would suggest him)--"Come a Little Closer" "Trying to Stop Your Leaving"

He does! Cher with a beard!

Keith Urban - okay I really did like "Kiss a Girl." Not really my kind of music but a clever catchy song that made me smile, especially when I saw the Taylor Swift prank concert video. But this isn't country, at least not to my ears, it is more like a kind of folksey middle of the road soft rock. Like a sort of pretty boy Bruce Springsteen.

But I will listeen to Kiss a girl again

John Berry - "You and Only You." Yeuck and only yeauck is what I say. No that isn't fair really, I only wrote that 'cos I thought it would be funny. But I couldn't get into it, like a sort of country power balad, but it didn't work for me.

Nice tits though. Oh no - that's you. Thanks for trying; it was a hopeless task. See you again soon I hope.

Well I really do appreciate you trying wildfire, but blanks here too I'm afraid:

My Maria: Nice big-country style video - I liked the horses and the canyons an all - but the song has nothing I could get excited about, maybe like you said, not complex enough, but I would say not melodic, boring lyrics and no invention of any kind, sorry!

Alan Jackson - No No NO! Dreadful sloppy drivel! (That's just to my ears of course - you obviously get something out of this and that's fine but I hated it! )

Keith Urban: Well as I said to sassicat, I really did like Keith Urban, especially "Kiss a Girl," which is great fun and very catchy, but I don't know if he really classes as country. "Making Memories of us" is a nice song, simple but effective lyrics and a pretty tune. A little bit too soft for me, but not bad.
Dreamer.

Hi Rose. Ahh yes, Dierks "Jerks" Bently, lol, how could I have forgotten him?

Nice big voice, well produced backing tracks....actually I don't mind him that much, lol. "Come a little Closer" is a pretty song, but just too much like all the other country I don't like for me to really want to listen to it sadly. "Trying to stop your leaving" sounds better to me. (Lovely river in the video, ) clever lyrics, if a bit obvious, and I quite like the sound of the song oveall, but with all this stuff I keep wanting it to have some additional musical idea to it, some invention, but it never does. He is good looking tough, lol!

Little Big Town - "Bring it on Home." Well I quite liked this.(Not in the same class as Sonny Boy Williamson's song obviously, but then that's a different song and it's blues so there's no real comparison and I don't know why I mentioned it lol. ) Reminiscent of The Band in some ways, in fact I kept expecting them to suddenly break into "The Weight."

Gloriana "Wild at Heart" is fun I agree. I can just see you singing along with this and dancing down the road. I reckon if I was there I would be too. Congratulations, you scored a hit!
