virgin Something about your face reminded me of my first real lover. Maybe it's because your bone structure was taught its arrangement in similar parts of the world, or maybe it's because when I knew him then, I imagined that he'd grow up to look like you. Your jagged-edged wit was proof that you'd never bore me, and you listened and remembered everything I said. Reminding myself to be careful with you, I welcomed you. We made a mess of wine in the kitchen, and talked about difficult love, the terror of war, good sex and accidental death. In bed, you were a tropical storm, all air-currents and destruction. The part of me with holes ripped in my sweatshirt sleeves and a runny nose loved the fear that the size of you, the brutality of you, the incredible vulnerability of you, shot through me. It hurt when I came, because I knew that the delicate hair curling between my fingers would never be there when I needed it, and that despite all of the talking and unwrapping of layers, you couldn't look at my face. My darkest voice, with perfume, sweet water, and a silken fan whispered to me that I should walk away slowly and not look back. |
