Being and nothingness...(*)

Well, after the marriage ‒ divorce songs it was time again for a «proper» love song, Placebo’s «Without You I’m Nothing». Of sorts though just because Placebo simply don’t have such, it’s not the way Brian Molko writes although human connections is his almost exclusive subject. The original, studio version is on their same titled album. But it’s really worth the effort to search for a live one, together with David Bowie (here ho goes again, it seems that I can’t get away from him whatever I do or write!). According to my opinion it is much better and that not just because Bowie is by any means Placebo’s most crucial influence. It is mostly because this song fits him very well and not just his voice, in fact it could very well had be written by him if he was starting out today...
«Without You I’m Nothing» is a really very strange song, first of all it has no chorus ‒ not a real one at least. But it is even more peculiar lyric - wise. For most people its best line is the one that it keeps repeated after every other in the first verse and it is my favourite too, that’s why I quoted it in a post some days ago, the «I'll take it by your side» one. Even if somebody really gets only this one it is more than enough...But the key line isn’t that, it’s «take the plan, spin it sideways». It is no incident that it comes up just before the last line which ‒ not incidentally at all again ‒ it’s the title too. The only problem is that it is only for...advanced users. Or even highly advanced users...Like the rest of the song too actually.
Why «highly advanced users»? Because to really feel, understand the meaning and actually make do these few words (the last two lines and much more the ultimate one) you should be able to send your ego from the sixth (or tenth or fourteenth...) floor crashing onto the pavement and then to not even look at it, really to not care about it anymore. And I don’t know many people who can actually do that, who are like that...That have the will, the power and the very special kind of guts so to be ready to just say when they feel that they should, even if it’s for the one and only time in their lives, «I’ll take it by your side...You know what, just everything and you know for how long, for as long as it takes».
If you think that you are one of them...well, it goes like with almost everything else in life: He/she who dares...wins! But it is really worth the risk...Because at sometime it definitely turns out good, it works and then it pays off for any ego crashing or whatever else you have to put up with till you get to that point, even if it takes too much time. And believe me, most of the times, sooner or later, that is bound to happen...Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

Strange infatuation seems to grace the evening tide
I'll take it by your side
Such imagination seems to help the feeling slide
I'll take it by your side
Instant correlation sucks and breeds a pack of lies
I'll take it by your side
Over-saturation curls the skin and tans the hide
I'll take it by your side
Tick - tock tick ‒ tock tick - tock
Tick - tick - tick - tick - tick - tock
I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time you vent your spleen
I seem to lose the power of speech
You’re slipping slowly from my reach
You grow me like an evergreen
You never see the lonely me at all
I...
Take the plan, spin it sideways
I...
Fall
Without you I'm nothing
Without you I'm nothing
Without you I'm nothing
Take the plan, spin it sideways
Without you I'm nothing at all…

(*The title of course is the most widely used translation of that of a book by the French philosopher Jean - Paul Sartre. A seminal book really that is the cornerstone of existentialism, the philosophical movement that Sartre founded and was - together with Albert Camus, on the literary side of things - his main representative until the end of his life. Some elements of it, more specifically of the «bad faith» theory which defines what traits comprise the essence of the human being and what are irrelevant to that, I used in my introductory notes to the song.)

Just me but with all the ego left at the door...

Your line or somebody else's? Don't worry, if I remember well that's the number I had to use for my first or second comment on one of your posts! And see where it has taken us...
Who's gonna forget a drinking session? Not me! Much more since it'd be the first one that both of us will be in a good mood and high spirits since...Really, has that ever happened? No, I don't think so. Reason to celebrate then!

Yap... el ser y la nada... the two sides of the same coin.

such an unlucky (desafortunada) expression "pays off" ... wouldn't you think so?

interesting to read what you write about...

Good weekend for U2. (BTW... I love ONE with Mary J. Blige, it just makes me full, like SirRob would say)

Regards,

Marcia.

Yes, I'll agree that it pays off like you say...Though - as much I like too Mary J Blige - I'd rather have "One" with Bono on his own. U2 one one one? Interesting!
May your weekend be really nice and fulfilling too.
