A mile stone.

Today marks my 49th year in Australia.

In all those years I've often wondered... what would my life have been like if my family and I hadn't left England all those years ago.

My family returned to England and I decided to stay. I had been such a pain in the arse, for so long when we got here, that my Mum and Dad considered sending me back to live with my Grandmother, while they stayed here a few more years. But by that stage, I had made friends, which took a while as we moved a few times, so it was hard for a coping with all the stuff that goes on in that stage of their lives, but I decided that I wanted to stay here.

It was heart breaking to first say goodbye to my Mother, Brother and Sister as they boarded the plane, and then a few months later to go through all that again once Dad sold their house and was on his way to join them.

Many years ago, I did return thinking I could live back there, but it didn't take me long to realize, I'd been away too long. My friends had moved on. Married and had a life I was no longer a part of, so again, with a broken heart, I say goodbye to my family.

I've missed out on so many things most take for granted.... my sisters wedding, the birth of my niece and her , brothers 2nd wedding.... I was able to make it for his first, the birth of his two and the list goes on.

I have two wonderful who have chosen careers where they are able to help others, but I still wonder............ what if?????

The road not taken, what if?...I,ve asked myself a similar question before and the only answer that I came up with was that I would be sad, bored, happy, etc...I'd just be standing in a different location.
Three years ago yesterday, I had a quadruple bypass and then six months of recovery time so that gave me a new perspective about life in general...now I ask "what's next?".
so many questions about life, so few answers, eh?
Hugs, my friend.

Good morning to you lady!! At least, it is morning here in Florida, USA!!! I admire your courage to start a new life somewhere else. That is a brave person, who will leave the familiar, and go seek the unknown! At least you had a common language. I am glad you have done well, and are content where you are. And I think you are correct - You can't go back!!! Reminisce is fine, but keep looking forward!!!!!

I understand only too well. When I left Jersey I gave up my residential qualifications so I couldn't go back but I have often wondered "what if" had I stayed. Life would have been very different I think but I am fairly content with how things turned out.

That's... always a great question... for a while...
Then after the third or fourth drink... it doesn't matter any more.
Here's where you are? Aren't you? 🤔
I'm gonna get another drink... and get back to you... 😊

Thanks for popping in.

I thought we spoke the same language. We'd only been here a matter of weeks when I went into the bank with Mum. I stood away from the counter and waited. One of the tellers said to me...... are ya right are ya? Of cause with an Australian accent. I had no idea what he'd asked me, even after he'd asked me the same thing a few times.

Some things here also have different names, so did take a while to learn things.

I had no idea you had to give up your residential qualifications. That was a major step.

I really should stop thinking... what if?A question impossible to answer.

I never write a blog while or after drinking. Doesn't make sense or it's just bitter...
Unfortunately.... I've left comments, during or after drinking.
Omg... now THAT, sometimes... turns out interesting... sort of...
Ever do THAT?
I don't necessarily, recommend it. 🤔 😶
Nope....

    Nope....
Most times after having a few drinks, I try and stay away from laptop and phone. But there's always the exception.

In general we tend to get more conservative in life, and take fewer risks through time, and yet 'what if' can always still take a hold. Too often we place too high a value on family when we are just as likely to grow apart from them as anyone else. Blood ties aren't always the greatest we have in life

The woman who suggested I join here, left Glasgow for Australia more than a decade ago and has thrived and has a better quality of life than she would likely have here

I think you have enjoyed a good life still, despite missing out on some of those milestone events as you term them.

Hopefully modern technology means you don't feel you are missing out on those old ties to the same extent

I think in the long run, I have had a better life here, especially with talking to my sister, who has some major health issues, and having so much trouble even getting to see a GP, won't even mention seeing specialists. We have some doctors that bulk bill, and we do have to pay for specialists, dentists etc. we have no problem getting to see them. There are waiting lists for some surgeries if you are a public patient.

Technology is a wonderful thing that was missing for many years when they went back, but now I can keep up with their lives via the net. Not the same, but a huge improvement.

What ifs will make you crazy.

I miss out on things living far away from family...but, we try to lessen that with lots of pictures, phone calls, and even video chats.

I try and not think of what ifs, but when special occasions happen over there it reminds me.

Thank goodness for technology making the world a little smaller.

I have been away from my home town for more than 42 yrs. Missed two nieces , one nefew, a host of marriages and deaths, funerals, reunions and celebrations. I look at things in a "what if" every so often. Life goes on and this old world keeps on turning!

I think having what if moments every so often isn't too bad, as long as it's not dwelled on for too long, and thank goodness for technology.

Wake up to yourself ! ... Draw a line in the sand, step over the line and never ever look back ! ... what you have experienced in the past is part of the fabric of life. ... Always think positive thoughts, even though you may be surrounded by shit, and think on the bright side of life ! ... (if you are, or were a Pom, you should know the words to that song ! ) Keep you own counsel, think positive, make plans, enjoy what YOU want to do !

Just dropped in to say hi. You haven't set up your Private Mail box yet, so I'll keep it clean... lol A lot of women are using the "Ice Breaker" to get their Gold Status back up and running.
Visit me on my side of blogville.... I'll have an iced drink waiting for you!
Take care...

I've been very slack... no blogs in ages and not set up my Private Mail box.

Been on leave and away a couple of times. Still got a bit of time off left, so will search out my notes and do the Private thing.
