My road trip

Pater Familias found me a cool new minivan and did the online auction thing. We had to go down today to pick it up before 10:00am or there'd be extra fees. We packed up the Wee One and Queen of No Pants and headed out early. So early in fact that my tax return hadn't made it to my account quite yet.
We got to Salem just before 10:00, ran my card, no good. So I called my bank. Seems debit cards have $1000.00 limit in a day so I had to get an extension for the day. Fine, ran it again!
They couldn't find the keys so we went downtown to pick up temporary plates while they got it sorted out. I hate driving in strange places, I actually have a touch of agoraphobia so being out of my comfort zone and having to deal with random strangers I was a bit out of sorts.
Got my plate, drove back, yay! They had it all ready for me to go. Drove down to get some gas, filled er up and was on my way with PF and the midgets behind me.
I got a little lost kinda. I wasn't in the right lane to turn back onto the interstate. So I drove a little further so I could turn left and turn around.
I saw a bus turning right and it looked clear, started to turn left into a parking lot and
WHAM!!!
Didn't see that coming? Me neither.
A big SUV was beside the bus I had seen. Nothing I could do, and it was all my fault. I just didn't see it there until it was too late.
I hadn't gotten insurance, that was first on the list of things I was going to do when I got home seeings how the money was in my account.
So I'm royally fucked. I had to have my new car towed, $7000.00 estimate on damages to my van. It's more than it's worth. So it's getting towed to my house later today.
I will also have to pay for the SUV's damage which wasn't nearly as bad, but still. It was a rental for them and everyone was ok thank Gawd, but still, I feel like complete shit.
I think the worst thing though for me, is that I feel like I let Pater Familias down, like I disappointed him. He was really good about it all, just asked me if I was okay and dealt with the tow truck.
But I feel like a failure.
And then the cop on scene gave me a ticket which I kinda figured he would, and a lecture. As if I didn't feel awful enough already. I know he was just doing his job and all, but it still sucked more than if I'd been seriously hurt.
I had to call my bank again for another extension to get cash from an ATM to pay for the tow truck to the place down there. And then call a tow person from up here to go down and get it before they start charging me for storage.
And still it comes back down to it, money shmoney, it's not what's bothering me so much. It's the feeling of letting down PF.
How messed up is that?

Anywho, I'm sure you all had a better day than I did, or at least I hope you all did.

I get nervous when I drive out of my comfort zone and don't know the roads. I've been lucky on more than one ocassion.
You're certainly not a failure, these things happen on a daily basis.
Just glad you're ok.

Comforting hugs! It is always a bad thing when it happens, but it is a positive thing that no people were hurt.

Sorry to hear of your truly funky situation, PB...

I can't say about NH, but I know in CA, if you buy a vehicle it's automatically insured for 72 hrs, I believe... which is the same amount of time for withdrawing from a purchase contract.

I'd check into it with your existing Ins.Co. before you go plunkin' cash for either of them wrecked hot-rods. Having your rate go up a bit is a far cry from shellin' out $7k+ in cash.

Thanks to all of you for your words and care.

I screwed up, I'll work through it. It could always be worse, I remind myself of that if nothing else.

As they say, "and this too shall pass".
