 I suspect it depends on the situation and the person. The only thing that comes to mind though is the desire to avoid a scene. If his past break ups involved histrionics or physical assaults it might be understandable but still in bad form.

 I agree this kind of behavior is not acceptable. Personally, I hope to continue meeting people as I am aging. But I hope I will not become senile to the point to become like this. The positive of that is that you have tried... If you do not try you can not know. Sometime we pick bad apples ...
