I remember Leonard Cohen. He was pretty popular in his day. He sang his song/poems in a laconic and melancholy sing song voice. He was a sort of philosopher beatnik and was kind of a walking Greenwich Village in one man. People thought he was deep. Some guys can manage to parlay that into an effective pickup technique. I suppose it worked well enough for Cohen. I've had some limited success at it myself. You wanted to concentrate on girls who wore black and ironed their hair. This is a pretty song, and the way they perform it is very much in keeping with what I think Cohen would have imagined. It's brand new to me yet brought back all these memories. Hell, I thought he was deep too. There's only the slightest resentment because he appeared to be better at scoring than me. As for the ironed hair- it's typecasting, ya know? It was fashionable at a time for a certain moody kind of girl to dress in morose, somber colors and wear their hair long and straight. Sort of pre-Goth. They went to Kalamazoo College locally. Natural curl was not coveted and shaving body hair was so bourgeois, don't you know. They wanted to appear equally deep. There was however a misogyny in beat culture, a fact of which my wife is fond of reminding me, since I like the beat writers. It was well expressed by Gregory Corso with his offhand demand in the company of any woman: "Feed me!" Kind of a prick, Corso was. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I find myself doing stretching exercises to Leonard Cohen's version a couple of times a week, however K.D. Lang's version at the Winter Olympics brought shivers down my spine and tears to my eyes at the same time.... Powerful voices to a powerful song..... RIP Mr. Cohen.....
