Healthy Choices For Women Over Fifty-Five

Women face unique health issues beginning at age fifty and throughout the rest of their lives. Heart disease, osteoporosis, breast cancer and diabetes occur more often in older women than in women.

Your family health history can influence your health risks in the years ahead. So can your lifestyle before and after menopause. Here is some interesting information about what you need more of and what t.o cut out when you reach this age:

Heart Disease, Not Breast Cancer Is What Women Should Worry About
Heart disease is actually the top killer for women. Each year, heart and stroke kill “31,000” women in Canada, according to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Women’s heart health risks increase after menopause, yet just one in five women believe heart disease is the greatest threat t.o their health.

Heart Attacks Are Different
For women, the most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort, but they are more likely t.o experience shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

You Are Not The Only One
Millions of women can’t control the “gotta go” feeling (urge incontinence) or leak during exercise or when they sneeze or cough (stress incontinence), and this risk increases after menopause. It’s common but not normal, and any leaking of urine should be evaluated and treated.

Your Sleeping Position Matters
Stomach and side sleeping positions can cause wrinkles over time, and this effect gets worse as you age thanks t.o the natural thinning of your skin, according t.o a study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Most sleep wrinkles can be seen on the forehead, lips, and cheeks. If you can tolerate it, sleeping on your back can slow down development of wrinkles.

You Really Are What You Eat
Plan a healthy diet rich in good fats, dark leafy greens, berries, and fish. Diets that limit carbs can also boost brain health. Your brain needs healthy fats, and fewer sugars and carbs.

Stick To A Bedtime
Most of us haven’t had a real bedtime since childhood. However, getting adequate sleep is highly underappreciated as a health issue, and setting and sticking to a regular bedtime can make sure you are getting enough. The Office on Women’s Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least seven to eight hours of sleep nightly.

You Can Still Get Pregnant
If you haven’t officially entered menopause, you can still become pregnant, and you may need t.o use birth control. Menopause is diagnosed when a woman hasn’t had her period for straight months. Most women enter menopause at age fifty-one.

Exercise Regularly
Weight training can greatly increase your overall muscle, ligament and tendon strength as well as bone density. This improves a woman's balance and ability t.o walk. Strength training, lifting weights or exercising against resistance, can also prevent or slow bone-weakening osteoporosis. Strength training also can lessen arthritis pain. Women who are physically active are less likely to develop adult-onset diabetes. You do NOT have to get in Ten Thousand Steps!

Falling Is A Real Risk
It’s not just the elderly who are in danger of falls and fractures: research finds falls become more common after the age of 40, particularly in women. Falling is more dangerous than you think: it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and mortality in the elderly, according the Centre for Disease Control.

What lifestyle changes did you make as you got older?

Personally, I have noticed that it takes me longer to recover from aches and pains. I also have to limit carrying grocery bags that are too heavy.

Yeah, it takes me longer to recover from aches and pains now.

Women in my age group tend to be wiser and just as attractive as any other.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I gave up soft drinks esp. diet drinks years ago. Bad for you bones and can increase your appetite and impede weight loss.

Thank you so much for sharing this important information for us Senior Ladies. You know I did know all of these except for the wrinkles one. That was news to me, I have a hard time sleeping on my back due to falling as a young girl and having tail bone issues.

There is another way to avoid wrinkles not sure if anyone knows this but giving blow jobs also help keep the wrinkles away, I guess that's why I really don't have any yet that are visible..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Wonderful post with so many great suggestions; which could apply to men as well. Except for that menopause stuff. Eat right and sleep long?
Hmmm.. That'll be a challenge.

Have a nice rest of the day. ❗❗😎

The consumption of processed foods is a major concern. They are often high in sugar, sodium, fat and empty calories. Eating too much of them have been linked to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer. Thanks for stopping by and sharing the approach you have been using.

The slowdown in recovery time does seem to be common.

Some people mistakenly switch to diet soda as a way to save calories. According to the Mayo Clinic, it's not clear if it's effective for preventing obesity and related health problems in the long term. Healthier low-calorie choices include water, skim milk, and unsweetened tea or coffee.

Sleeping on your back also causes most people to snore. Sounds like you discovered a great tip for preventing wrinkles! Wish I had heard about that sooner

Yes, most healthy choices are not gender-specific.

The only thing comparable is the ability to follow a post so that you are alerted if new comments are added. Happy Thursday to you too. It's a beautiful sunny day here!
