Daylight Saving Time Myths and Facts

If Daylight Saving Time is observed in your area, don’t forget t.o turn your clocks ahead at two a.m. tomorrow morning.

Here are some common myths about DST that you may not be aware of:

Myth: ’s Called “Daylight Savings Time”

The Real Story: In North America and Australia, the convention of setting our clocks ahead one hour in the spring and behind one hour in the fall is properly known as “Daylight Saving Time.” For whatever reason, people have developed a habit of referring t.o it conversationally as “Savings Time,” plural. Britons refer t.o DST as “Summer Time,” while in Italy, the practice is called “Ora Legale.”

Myth: Benjamin Franklin Invented Daylight Saving Time

The Real Story: Thanks t.o An Economical Project, a satirical essay Franklin wrote in “1784” urging that Parisians adopt an earlier sleeping schedule, Franklin is often credited with “inventing” daylight saving time. Actually, that honour belongs William Willett, a British builder. While on an early morning horseback ride in the outskirts of London in “1905”, Willett theorized that if the United Kingdom moved its clocks forward by 80 minutes between April and October, Britons would be able t.o enjoy more sunlight. Willett spent much of his own personal fortune trying to persuade the British Parliament t.o embrace the idea, but he died in “1915” without seeing his dream come t.o fruition.

Myth: Germans Were the First T.0 Embrace Daylight Saving Time

The Real Story: Germany adopted daylight saving time in “1916” t.o conserve energy during World War I. However, certain regions of Canada were already following DST as early as “1908”. On July 1 of that year, residents of Port Arthur in Ontario, which is now Thunder Bay, were the first in the world t.o turn their clocks forward by one hour.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time is Observed Everywhere

The Real Story: Countries along or below the equator, don’t implement time shifts since daylight hours rarely change from season t.o season. Much of Asia and Africa opt-out of DST as well, as does Iceland and parts of Australia. Even though Antarctica has no daylight in the winter and 24-hour daylight in the summer, research crews living in the area observe DST t.o communicate with their home bases.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time Makes Us Healthy

The Real Story: More sunlight may mean more vitamin D, but numerous studies have also linked daylight saving time t.o an increase in road accidents and health problems. A “2008” Swedish study in the New England Journal of Medicine which was based on information collected over a 20-year period, found a higher incidence of heart attacks in the first weekdays after clocks move forward and fall back. Changes in circadian rhythm too, can also trigger cluster headaches and lead t.o days or weeks of discomfort.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time Helps Farmers

The Real Story: When the United States passed the Uniform Time Act in “1966”, people thought the extra daylight would give farmers more time t.o harvest their produce in the morning. In reality, it has the opposite effect, and farmers tend t.o have been the loudest critics of DST over the past several decades.

Do you have trouble adjusting t.o the time change? Is a difference in how you react when losing an hour vs gaining an hour?

I do NOT stay up till two a.m. just so I can change the clocks. In the evening, I wander around the house and adjust the few that need to be done. It's almost magical how the t.v., cell phone and computer clocks change automatically

When do you change your clocks?

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I change my wrist watch, oven, microwave and radio/clock.

It really affects me, getting up an hour earlier is surprisingly tough for several weeks! It's almost like having jet lag.
Even though I work from home, I continue the discipline of waking early and starting early.

Never understood the terminology behind "Daylight Saving" time - I mean, there are still the same number of hours of daylight in the day, it is just the sunrise and sunset times that are changing. What exactly is it that is being "saved"?

Still two weeks before we move to BST (British Summer Time) here. Then there's that time of panic where you forgot to change a clock and think you are an hour early. Like the one in the car on a Monday morning. Thankfully most of my clocks are now automatic.

I have 12 clocks in my house.
I used to go nuts. I learned not to bother.

Today I'm back to the right time... on most of them. In the fall, I'll be OK with the rest. ❗❗😎

Lucky you! I didn't check to see how many states do not follow DST.

Usually, I just go around and adjust the clocks when I go to bed or whenever, I feel like it. I have never waited till the next day to do it.

It physical effects that some folks go through are well-documented. I am always surprised at how quickly my dog adapts. When I was working from home, I would get up and do everything as if I was heading to the office. Helped keep me disciplined and focused.

I wasn't exactly sure when BST started. Thanks for stopping by and clearing that up and sharing your perspective.

Thanks for the information. I didn't think there were many that weren't following it. There have been talks off and on of us dropping it but hasn't happened yet. Don't think it will be dropped in my lifetime.

So, sometimes you are early and other occasions, late. Split the difference with your car clock? The imposed curfew in your area must be a nightmare 😱.

It is a topic that is often debated. Many simply don't see any benefit gained by following it. I hated in the dead of winter when I would get up in the dark and get home in the dark. Congratulations on finding out you are going to be a Great Nana to a baby girl
