Recollections of no sex in da U.P.

I've been getting a few profile views lately from people in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. (For those not in the midwest, that area is on the west end of the Upper Peninsula.) It got me to thinking about my days there as a student at Michigan Tech. Now, I don't know if this is still true, but back when I was there the male to female ratio was roughly 3 to 1. This was not a school to attend if getting hot dates was a major objective. Still, I suppose I was like many a high school grad heading off to college, hoping I could get some cute coed to visit my dorm room so I could show her the real "brick dick" on campus. (inside joke for Tech people)

As it turned out, my stay at school there was just as sexless as high school. Want to know the difference between my dorm room and a monastery? My dorm room had a mini fridge. I know I wasn't alone in this. There was a t-shirt at the time, probably inspired by sexual frustration, that listed the top ten reasons Tech girls were like Lake Superior. I don't recall all ten, but a couple were "Lake Superior won't fit in my loft either", "They both swallow seamen", and "both have waves you can ride." Really not fair, since I don't think the girls I saw were fatter on average than other places.

I did have female friends, but for one reason or another nothing ever happened between us. And one of them even made me swear off ever finding a mate for quite a while. Let me tell you about three of them. I'll use screen names to protect identities.

"Cowlover" (don't ask, I don't know nor want to know) was the first friend I made at school. She was basically everything I wasn't personality wise. Very outgoing, boisterous, somewhat adventurous, and liked parties. She and I hung out with the same group of people most nights. And I would like to think that during our time in the same space we were about as close as two people could get without sex being in the picture. It simply wasn't going to be in the picture because for much of the time I knew her, she had a boyfriend. We'll call him "Davey." You know you have a trusted relationship with someone when they will share details of their sexual encounters. CL did that with me. Told me one day that Davey was mad at her because the night before she had wrapped her legs around him to prevent him from pulling out at orgasm. I also went with her to the police station one night as moral support when she went to make a statement about a guy at a frat party that took advantage of her when she was passed out. (I don't recall the particulars other than she knew it was happening but knew she did not consent) Where was Davey? Couldn't handle that chore for some reason. Coupling those two incidents together (and a few I've omitted) I wasn't really surprised when their marriage broke up years later.Oh was my wife unhappy that day! Said CL was looking to make up for lost opportunities or something like that. I denied it then, but she probably had a point. Haven't seen CL since.

"Ice Queen": Not even a screen name, I only knew her before chat rooms started taking off. CL coined the term, which I thought was odd at first because the two were roomies in school. Anyway, IQ must have been my way of scoring the popular chick by proxy since she was CL's roomie and close friend. She was more like me in that she was kind of quiet and bright. We started getting closer in our 2nd year at school. And I was thrilled when she agreed to do a double date with me, CL and Davey. Our evening included dinner at a Chinese restaurant and then a dance at the student union. I was so excited, I was oblivious to whatever was going on in IQ's head at dinner. I thought it was going fairly well. We got to the dance. I was having a great time. I slow danced with a girl for the first time! If IQ was even casually observant, she had to have caught the raging hard on in my pants. Maybe that's why she did what she did next? What did she do? Left the dance. Said she couldn't keep going. It was like I was in some sort of bad romantic comedy movie! You know what was even funnier? The fact that we managed to patch things up later. She knew how hurt I was by the whole thing. Our friendship lasted another year, we even went out once or twice, but I was never able to get past the holding hands phase with her. When I tried in my ever so geeky way to encourage something more (I left her a coupon good for one kiss from me) she shut it down. I spent the rest of the year avoiding her in the dorm hallways and cafeteria. Somewhere in one of my drawers at home is my old wallet. Inside are the tickets to the dance we went to. It was a reminder to never get involved with a woman again.

"Snipe" was a girl I knew the last few years at Tech. I really only mention her now as a "are you blind!" moment. Sweet girl, large frame, probably as tall as I am. I would have hated to have played against her in girls basketball. Kinda reminded me of CL personality wise except more grounded. She'd join in on role playing games (the geek kind, not the adult kind) and was just fun to hang around with. But I was fresh off of being burned by the Ice Queen and had absolutely no desire at the time to see if I could have a successful relationship with Snipe.

So there you go. One dateless wonder's experiences in the Keweenaw. Maybe some time I'll relate my, for lack of a better word, experiences with gay guys back then. No sex involved, just some culture clashing.
