PSA : San Diego BloggerBash - Get Your Hep A Shots!!!

Regarding planning for the upcoming San Diego Blogger's Bash in March 2018 :

Something needs to be said about the Hep A outbreak that is currently ongoing in and around<b> downtown </font></b>San Diego and vicinity. This outbreak was first noted in early 2017, and has only continued to spread since then. In spite of all efforts to contain and eliminate it, health officials state that, to date, NO slowdown has been seen in the rate of infections.

On Sept 3, 2017, a “state of health emergency” was declared for SD county. As of Sept 25, there have been 17 fatalities, 461 confirmed cases, (with 315 of those requiring hospitalization), and another 700 known exposures to the Hep A virus. Four healthcare workers and 6 food handlers have been confirmed infected, so far. Officials state an additional death has been attributed to a Hep 1B strain associated with this outbreak. The CDC is coming to SD, for the second time, during the first week in Oct. to assist.

The current investigation has shown no common transmission medium, such as a particular restaurant, or grocery store. However, contact with contaminated surfaces, and human feces are known problem sources. Of those deaths and infections noted above, 33% are among illicit drug users and/or homeless; however, 25% of the victims are neither.

Although the Mar 2018 Bash is still 6 months away, it appears this outbreak may not be curtailed by then.

If you decide to come, the Board of Health is recommending all tourists get 2 vaccination shots for Hep A Virus before doing so! An additional one for H1BV is suggested, as well.

 Correction to the above.
With a few more new cases recently added, it is now reported 33% of the total confirmed cases are NOT drug users/homeless.

California Dept of Public Health states this to be the worst Hep A outbreak since the vaccine became available in 1995.

 YIKES - I think someone like KitKat or Rachel had already alerted me to this, but thanks so much for the "headsup".

I will ensure that the Blog organizers know about it.

 I wonder if this could be the aftermath of the normal summer migration by Phoenicians.I mean, it's no secret that anyone that visits here has to do massive doses of heroin just to keep pace here in the summer months.
