No, you're not wrong at all.

Sadly, it would appear that the US doesn't learn from its tragedies.

Kind of depends on where you live, doesn't it ?

Better to be prepared, no law against self-preservation.

It's our 2nd Amendment right. If any of those county party-goers or teachers in Newtown or soldiers in Chattanooga or Ft. Hood had had a weapon, the results may have played out differently.

Why would I ever allow myself to become someone else' victim when I have the tools and the judgement to prevent and defend myself? If you've ever been victimized then you know you never want to experience it ever again.

In many regions of the country, the police are too far away both in time and distance to be of immediate help. They're there to take the reports, collect evidence and create leadership from an aftermath of chaos.

The officers that are recommending we arm ourselves are the ones that understand that they ... the police ... cannot protect everybody.

How does old axiom go... "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".

    Quoting Megan6627:
Unfortunate situations? My home. My life. You will not take either from me without use of deadly force on my part. I call that more than an Unfortunate situation. I call it real life. As far as if concerns me, as much as it is up to me on my part, I will live in peace. Cross that line and I will meet you eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth.
With all due respect... "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth"? That just vengeance. Perhaps we do need to teach "Christians" Christian values. Know your bible... vengeance is mine say it the Lord, I (meaning god not man/woman), will dispense justice any eye for an eye....

I don't think anyone on either side of the gun debate is suggesting people just stand there and get shot. The recommendations in order are flee, hide or fight as a last resort. Active shooter situations have been studied and studied, the conclusion is always the same, more guns at the scene is a bad idea.

Highly trained SWAT teams use a great deal of communication when entering a situation from different directions so they don't shoot each other. It's a romantic wild wild west, Dirty Harry idea, but what makes you think that a group of untrained civilian with no communication won't end up putting more bullets in each other than in the gunman. Also when the armed civilians or the police encounter civilians with guns drawn, do they start shooting or ask questions first?

Close quarter combat is messy, it's not like a Hollywood movie were the bad guy get shot by good guys with go home at the end. It not like call of duty, with no stress and a replay button. Highly trained military and police make mistakes in these high stress situations. You would be suprized how may law enforcement or millitary personnel are killed or injury by friendly fire stray bullets. The rate of civilian killed and injured will increase exponentially with what you are backing. As one of the comments said, police are responsible for protecting the community, that's why the FBI, every state and every major city doesn't want to see citizens trying to take down active shooters. More people will end up dead.
