Question… Is it a chick thing?
Question… Is it a chick thing? Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day; one of the favorite days of the year for Hallmark, Chocolatiers, Florists and Jewelers. I won’t bore you with my stance on the shallowness of everything that has come to dominate Valentine’s Day, but the endless banter about it, in the blogs, on the Net, on TV and radio has started my mind wondering about the whole thing. This morning I was listening to a little drive time radio, a male and a female host, and they are musing about Valentine’s Day. The male host was talking about all the different things you can do for your loved one on Valentine’s Day, what will (has) go over and what will (has) not. The female host is jumping in, telling her stories about what her past significant others have done for her that were home runs and the strike outs. They talked about different thinks being appropriate at different points in the relationship etc.; the segment ended with the male host saying, “Guys can’t win”. I thought about his statement, and thought, and thought... Valentine’s Day, at least the way it is celebrated, even in these modern times, is a pretty one sided affair. It’s still old school courtly love, where the man is to romance the woman. If you think of any of the commercials you have watched pedaling Valentine’s Day products, it’s always the dude buying stuff for the woman. I don’t ever recall a commercial where a woman is presenting her lover with a custom fitted set of Taylor Made Irons, or a New Porsche. It’s ironic that in the era of the emancipated woman we still celebrate Valentine’s Day at all, given its association with a line from a 14th century Geoffrey Chaucer poem; "For this was on St. Valentine's Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate." The irony, there are several; the poem was apparently written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement (and the accompanying peace treaty) of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. Yeah, a couple of 15 year old, in an arranged marriage; how romantic is that? My question, as it is celebrated now, is Valentine’s Day a chick thing; a day when guys do things for women? If you are a woman, have you ever gone out and bought stuff, A new driver, an 18 year old bottle of Scotch, or a Tag Heuer watch for your man? If you are a man, have you ever received a manly gift from a woman in your life on Valentine’s Day? I’m as romantic as the next person, probably more so, so I’m ok with the status quo (Valentine’s Day being all about her). However, I would like to see Steak and Sex day get an equal amount of musing when it comes time for that. Find pleasure in giving pleasure |

That steak and sex day for the guys counterpart to St Val's Day sounds like an excellent idea... If my finances permitted, I'd be very happy to buy a very special bottle of aged Scotch or an expensive sports car for a man I loved... There is one guy in blogland that I would like to do some of these things for and I've already mentioned this to him on his blog... I'm not in love with him but he is someone I adore. I have only ever once (in 1994) received more than a Happy St Val's Day greeting... I think people should strive to be romantic towards eachother throughout the year, not one 'designated' day... Real romance isn't about Champagne, chocolates and flowers... It's about massages, poetry and just doing kind, thoughtful things for eachother to make their lives less stressful and more pleasant. I agree, making it special with random "sweetness" throughout the year is the way to go. However I have no real objections to sharing something a bit extra special on Valentines day if it would make her feel extra special

Guilty as charged, sir. I'm in a fairly new relationship at the moment, and I have expectations. I want him to surprise me with plans that he's made, and I want it to be romantic. I don't care if it's cheese and crackers at the beach, or a poem he's written by candlelight, just so long as it romantic. And yeah, in years past, I have gotten presents for my lovers. I once sent flowers and balloons to my boyfriend at work; he was embarrassed but he loved it.

Making a nice dinner and giving a massage isn't that rare. I do it often when I have someone in my life. It seems that the people who are single on Valentine's day are the more cynical ones. Yes, you should let your partner know how much you care all year 'round, but what wrong with making a little extra effort on Valentine's day. And I really don't think all women expect expensive gifts. In fact I think it is just the opposite. I think what most women would like is there's partner's undivided attention for the evening. Put down your cell phones and stay off the computer. Find pleasure in giving pleasure

Intresting that most of the women who responded reciprocate gift giving, but that hasn't been my experience, your or a large % of the male population. Find pleasure in giving pleasure

The last time I was seeing someone over V-Day, I brought over one delicious chocolate covered strawberry and left it on his pillow. I also hid a bag of his favourite candy in his sock drawer where I knew he would find it the next day. AND I left cards for his two kids. What did he do? Well, we DID have fun with the strawberry ....... Find pleasure in giving pleasure
