Skateboarding Precipices

First, I just wanna thank all the kind folks that tend to read my blog.

I dunno what compels y'all, but I like that marvel no matter what its form.

Extra special shouts-out to those that comment... and often. It is great fun getting to know you "in this way".

I keep having this recurring inquiry to which I simply cannot get satisfactory resolution. What are we doing here?

Don't answer that, cuz my real question is more important.

Ever found yourself on the edge of something you have never done before?

It's exhilarating. A bit frightening. Uncomfortable, to a degree, but inviting nonetheless.

Whether it be a sexual activity you have not experienced yet, a new job, moving to a different city or simply ordering off of a menu where nothing "looks good" to you... how do you approach it?

The crazy thing about "never" is that once you do... you can't say "I never" again.

Tomorrow I will cross a line that has been "drawn in the sand". The line is not of my making. It's just a line. Like a state border or something... "Welcome to Montana" -- or whatever.

I remember roadtripping up to Wisconsin annually. There was a rest stop called "Bong Rec Area", or something like that. My pals and I would pull over and smoke pot (we were youngin' s back then) -- just to celebrate the fact that the rest stop had the word "bong" in it -- and more importantly, because we had "arrived" in the new place.

How do YOU tackle a new frontier? That "small step for man (or woman) but giant leap for mankind"? Is it better to have a list of "I nevers" or a list of "I haves"?

I'm not cut out for a roller coaster anymore although I did like it when I was a kid. I think a canoe is more my style these days, going with the flow. And cussing the black flies.

But do you ever respond to the inquiry, sir? When was the last time you did something you have NEVER done before?

And here I thought the inquiry was: "How do YOU tackle a new frontier? That "small step for man (or woman) but giant leap for mankind"? Is it better to have a list of "I nevers" or a list of "I haves"?"

My bad. At the end of December I retired. That was breaking new ground for me.

Do you find yourself looking for things to do?

That's how I picture my retirement. Approaching boredom and then zapping it right in the kisser.

No. I'm not bored very often- actually, almost never. The days are still too short to get stuff done but the pressure is off. When i was working I was getting pretty resentful that a corporation was demanding so much of my time- it got worse with time rather than better. I have a very long list of projects to be ignored, and I number the items on the list so I'll know at a glance which to ignore first.

You're so funny... "which to ignore first".

Mom always said, "if you're bored, it's your own fault".

I guess I was just wondering how you are adapting. It's almost been a year now, eh?

I love being retired. I miss the big money, but it's worth every penny I'm not making.
