Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Forgive me for using an infamous quote from one of my heroes Johnny Rotten for this blog's headline, this week I'll be talking about scams, rather than infidelity. Rotten shouted this line at end of one of the Sex Pistols' last ever gigs in San Francisco, having been royally shafted by his management team. I've been doing this online dating malarkey for a while now, the main benefit of going round the block a few times is you get wiser to patterns of unreliable and dishonest behaviour and attempts at fraud. Over Christmas I read about a new blackmail scam being perpetrated by criminal gangs operating out of the Philippines. This involved swapping details on Skype, getting men to wank on cam, capturing and recording the image and attempting to blackmail them, presumably after hacking their computer and obtaining their friends/family's email addresses. For many years a number of Filipina women inhabited the UK chat room on this site, generally they didn't get far with the men on here because they were pretty irritating and of little use to anyone in the UK, being 10,000 miles away. They seemed to be harmless enough but no longer . . . I don't mind camming so I guess there is the potential for me to be a prime target to a cam-related scam, however I don't do it for voyeurism/exhibitionism purposes - it's just to be open and show you what I look like today - no bullshit about 10 - 15 year old pics. It's not about putting on a performance and giving you a 'money shot'. You just get to see me, and a confirmation I'm single - no wife and running around behind me. I'm pretty robust when it comes to rejecting requests to cam too and I count myself lucky that I've been stubborn and inflexible about this after an experience earlier this month. I spotted an attractive woman on the IMC in Paris, we had a short conversation in French for a while, she spotted I was English and switched to my language, saying French wasn't her first language anyway. So we swapped details and went to Skype, a reasonable move considering how slow and faltering the IMC usually is. She told me she was originally from Iran, though she sounded nothing like it and proceeded to ask me a bunch of personal questions . . . 'Are you single' 'Are you happy about being single?' 'Have you ever had a girlfriend?' The last question in particular is a piss take if you're talking to a 41 year old and I could barely believe the bare-faced cheek when she asked this, in retrospect she was angling for a source of embarrassment on my part, someone who I wouldn't want to know I was being rude on cam. I had my cam on at the time and after my mood started to darken due to her suspicious line of questioning she asked me to show more on cam. I told her that's something I don't do, to which she responded, 'There's not much going on here so I'm going to head off'. Head off she did, followed by a swift block by me. It's depressing to take such a negative and defensive approach to online dating but ultimately you have to look after Number One. It's difficult to spot some of these scams if you haven't heard about them before however I apply the general rule that I won't show or do things when asked by someone that won't show themselves, as this is always suspicious to a degree and I don't like hypocrites. Hahaha, that's exactly the same reaction I'd have had! This made me laugh, with you, though, not at you, I promise  It's funny you mention this scam, as I read someone blogging about it the other night. The guy who wrote it, well, suffice to say I took a dislike to him immediately, so it wouldn't have been wise for me to make any comment on the blog. So I said nothing. I'm not quite sure, given what he said, that he's playing with...a full deck shall we say. Your security and privacy is what's important above everything else, AKA looking after number one  I was under the impression it wasn't possible to record videos, but I guess they're using software to do this?You're not being negative or defensive, Matt, you're being wise and doing things on your own terms...and that's the way it should be. Hi there Holly, You may have spotted that my first ever blog was about camming and the etiquette surrounding that. No coincidence it was my very first message to the world on here as it's something I feel very strongly about - I don't smile at ghosts - don't ask me to smile, wave, wank, juggle some cabbages on cam if I can't see you back. You don't have an emotional response to someone you don't know well, and you don't get aroused (as a man) if someone gives you little or no visual cues or can't be bothered to talk seductively. This is where this scam will fall down even when they're targeting people more willing or gullible than me. I've always been suspicious of the exhibitionists/voyeurs anyway as performing on cam is a poor substitute for real sex so why bother if you're really looking to get laid with someone from here? It shouldn't be an end to itself, but of course it would be if you're secretly married and don't have permission to play away from home . . .
