It’s Only Rock And Roll But . . .

It’s Only Rock And Roll But . . .

But . . . before I get to the point of this post . . .
I a product of the 50s, the mid 50s to be more specific. As such I have seen a great deal of fairly amazing (good and bad) things happen in the world. The Kennedy assignation (I recall it was a very sad day / week), the first man on the Moon (I watched on TV), Vietnam (I protested in high school), the sexual revolution (still working on this one) , the jet age (but I love piston driven engines), Nixon / Watergate, and many, many more. Another product of the mid 50s is Rock and Roll.

My first clear recollection of music other than what my parents listened to (Sinatra, Como, and Martin – which I like) was The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. My dad was not fond of what he heard or saw. I think Elvis was about as “far out” as he could go. Me, I got myself a transistor radio and listened all the time and went through a lot of those rectangular batteries. When my dad started driving some neighborhood and me to school he got a half hour dose of rock. I recall when Tommie Roe came out with “Dizzy” my dad would say “That damn song is making me dizzy”.

“Growing up” in Los Angeles I was close to some fairly famous clubs (The Troubadour, Whiskey A Go-Go, Gazzarri"s) where some well known bands (Eagles, Linda Ronstadt) got their starts. It was also where “Surf” and “Hot Rod” music got rolling – the Beach Boys, The Surfaris (Wipeout), and Jan and Dean. J & D went to the same high school I did and I lived near and drove through “Dead Man’s Curve” (Sunset Blvd just west of N. Whittier Drive) on a regular basis. I got my first speeding ticket not very far from there. Rock has been the soundtrack playing while I did a lot of things for the first time and when I did some of them many other times.

“So RedRock, why are you telling us this?” Good question whoever asked that. Because the nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame came out today. You, yes you, can vote for 5 of them to be inducted into the HoF.

The first 5 are who I voted for, the rest are meh IMO. Who would you vote for? And feel free to throw in why if you’re so inclined.

Def Leppard
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
Stevie Nicks (I loves me some Stevie)
The Zombies
Todd Rundgren

Devo
Janet Jackson
John Prine
Kraftwerk
LL Cool J
MC5
Radiohead
Rage Against the Machine
Roxy Music
The Cure

Todd Rundgren's best-known songs would be "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" from the 70s. He has also written and produced a lot of other people's songs.

I'd have to put the Cure and Rage against the machine in there somewhere. Stevie should have already made it.

Speaking of bands getting their start. In the 70's there was a non alcoholic club in SA called the Teen Canteen. Underaged teens would go there to listen to bands, rock..and of course sneak out back to smoke weed.

First place I saw a little band called ZZTop. Before they even had a album out. Oh..and no beards. LOL
