Endangered Turtle Soup
Endangered Turtle Soup Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico...off a jetty. I have a 4" live perch under a float hoping for a King Mackerel when the pole starts hopping around. Grabbing it up, I get excited. It's pulling hard, really hard and damnit....a garbage can sized endangered ridley turtle pops up with the line wrapped a flipper. Little ones take 10 minutes to get in....this monster is 10 times bigger. Twenty minutes of pulling and reeling gets it close to the jetty.......I am starting to see this finishing in 15 minutes. Then the turtle wraps himself around some guys shark line anchored to the bottom. Rats....turtle is locked on the guys shark line. He tells me to reel his line in.....I heave...not going anywhere the turtle has pulled it into the rocks. Can't get a break at all, now, not wanting the turtle swimming with 30' of line which will snag and hold it underwater till it drowns.....I have no choice. I get my snorkeling gear on and dive into the water. Turtle doesn't know I am helping.....he keeps trying to bite my fingers off. I grab his flipper and DO NOT LET GO! Whipping out my knife....I cut lines. After 20 minutes of bouncing in the waves, keeping turtle close but not to close as to lose fingers.....it is free and waves goodby and is gone. Me....I drag my tired frustrated ass out of the water...after getting beat on the rocks a little....and have only one thought......STUPID FUCKING TURTLE. He better send me a Xmas card. Next time, I make endangered turtle soup. |

I like them lots better AWAY from the jetty I am fishing from. Really neat to see a hatchling release....hundreds of little tiny turtles flopping across the beach and into the water.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Soup? Wonder how it will taste with BBQ sauce.

Nice to see you took the time and action to free the turtle from the lines, most folks would have just cut the line and let it go without a second thought. Yes the turtles can be a nuisance but you did the right thing.
