Keep the business and friendship relationships separate. Don't discount your professional services because of the friendship. Respect each other as business professionals. That customer who low-balled your price will always be a pain in the ass.

I've never worked for friends. I do however work for my landlord. I was given the option when I first moved in here to have the rent taken out of my bi-weekly pay or paying it like anyone else would. For budget concerns I chose the latter. As I like to know where and when my bills get paid. As time went on rather than increase my wages ( though they still did so ) my monthly rent was lowered. By the time the old owners had chosen to sell the place I was paying less than half rent than others would pay for a like unit. When the new owners took over my rent stayed the same. My boss had it written into his new agreement with the new owners to not pay any rent at all.. Wish I'd thought of that! As for your situation, I'd say do what's best for you. The ease of not having to pony up the dough every month for your place has it's appeal. The draw back is when you work a deal out like that it feels like your not getting paid for the work your putting in, at least to me it does. As you know the work we do is seldom glamorous and down right gross at times. At least with a pay check coming in we know that people appreciate the work we do. In any event, what ever you choose to do get it down in writing. Good luck my friend!
