Hi Joy! Labor Day is big here in my town. Starting with fireworks tonight and car show tomorrow. Have rides for kids and big parade on Monday. Have a good time not working. My friend is working all weekend sucks for me. Butch

We have missed our last two traditional May day celebrations and marches and falling numbers of trade unionists around the world it seems. It is sad that most of the benefits of all workers were gained on the hard work of the unions even the pen pushers in their plush offices. Another event that hasn't happened for two years is the Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival.

Thank you joy> Too many people have forgotten how labor/labour day came into existence.

I was in a Union for 24 years. I was our store Steward for 4 years. That was interesting, being able to sit in on contract negotiations and have a vital part of it all. I had to listen to everyone bitch anyway, so I figured I might as well get half off of my dues for it.

My grandfather was chosen to lead the annual Labour Day Parade at the CNE one year in the 1950’s. I have a photo of him carrying the Union Jack at the parades lead. Trade Unionism has shrunk precipitously as noted in your article but it’s expanded in the public service sectors, but I don’t know by how much. They were responsible for creating relatively good paying jobs along with benefits like paid sick leave, increased vacation time, extended health insurance benefits and generous pensions. My father worked for one Scarborough manufacturer from the age of 19 until his retirement at 60. its employees were not unionized and the owners managed to do that legally by voluntarily paying their employees about 5% more than the highest going rate negotiated by unions in the same industry….and they went out of their way to be good employers. Both my grandfather and father benefited from the Union movement, one directly, the other indirectly.

Nice looking camp, I wouldn't mind spending some time there. Like you my friend I'll be working this weekend with the exception of Monday. No plans for me at all. Just a bit of relaxing. Have a good one!

You're right, our May Day is the closest we get to Labour Day, though it's not widely marked as a holiday for workers.

I'm scandalous. I wear white after Labor Day. It's more of a societal faux pas, as opposed to a *mortal sin*, to wear white after Labor Day. As Memorial Day is often viewed as the "unofficial beginning of summer", the first Monday in September (Labor Day) is often view in society as the "unofficial end of summer", when it's customary to close up that beach house in the Hamptons, put away your summer clothes (most of which tends to be white or at least light colored), and drag out the attire for more cool and colder temps. Not so much observed in the present, back then anyone who was hoity-toity looked down on someone wearing white after Labor Day as "not keeping up with the Jones' ". Someone who wasn't *in the know*, and often not invited to neighborhood get-togethers. Though that last bit is a bit of an extreme, if you've ever seen the movie "The Help"... the scene where the character Celia Foote tries to invite herself to the ladies luncheon and bridge party, they try to hide but are seen inside by Celia knocking on a window... they snidely giggle at how foolish she looks standing there trying to be let in... Yeah, hoity toity people had that air about them towards the "wearers of white after Labor Day". From what I understand it was something that was popular during my G-maw's days, and more prevalent on the east coast. Here in SoCali, we don't really give a shit what you wear after whatever holiday; so long as you have clothes on, you're good. "Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who matter won't mind, and those who mind won't matter." ~ Dr. Seuss.
