Hey! You Can't Be A Feminist!
Hey! You Can't Be A Feminist! You're a man. You are getting non-stop hit on by other men and women you are definitely not interested in having sex with. The men are cat calling you. The women are constantly looking you up and down. Does this mean you don't want to have sex with anyone? Or, that you are actually only interested in sex with one person who thinks they own you? It cracks me up when a man thinks he can define feminism for me. As if I don't know what equality means to me! As if! Some men seem to think a feminist can't take her clothes off, can't have relationships based on sexual gratification, and can't have open sexual relationships willingly. Uh, sorry, but nothing could be further from the truth. For one, there's something fairly empowering when a woman takes her sexual gratification into her own hands, and not just masturbating. It's feminist to have sex with the people I'm interested in when I'm interested. When that is the case, I'm calling the shots--just as, frankly, any man would want to do. Sheesh, I've known this about women for years and no one knew it better then than those women. If we are talking about the guys you are referring to.That have all kinds of people checking them out.Something tells me they have plenty of dates and if they're sleeping with these dates I would hazard a guess that they have a pretty good idea what women are doing with their sexuality.I mean it only stands to reason. There is that possibility that They're the same guys that think the people elect the president of the United States and the electoral college is some Vo tech school in nebraska. Using more than all the road!

I am glad you can find humor in this, Red Elf. Some of us are not cracked up by men with such double standard beliefs about others. Some misbegotten men seem to believe that feminist = enemy. It's quite sad. Thanks for sharing your insights. My featured post this week: Pulling Fantasy Sex Out of My Ass.

Equality. It works for all of us.

I know I'm going to get my ass kicked for this but feminism never made sense to me. Women have always been equal.

I'm learning new things about feminism all the time and that equality, as you state, is decided/defined by an individual female. I used to assume that all feminists (or most) were against women in the media flaunting their anatomies to make statements or sell products. But actually, to judge a woman for doing that is called "slut-shaming." Every year here in L.A. there's the Slut Walk* (something I blogged about here some years ago). Meanwhile, there are feminists who don't believe in flaunting bodies to make a statement (as one of the Kardashians was lambasted for doing several weeks ago). Some women don't like use of the word "bitch," yet there's Bitch Magazine. This is a big country, and diversity is inevitable. I'm a male and don't have a say in these things, but I do listen to Feminist Magazine every Tuesday afternoon on the radio (in SoCal) to at least try and stay informed. I apologize if I misrepresented anything here. Hopefully I at least got the big picture right. ----- *whose message is, "The way I dress is not a yes."

A lot of men (and even women) seem to fall for the negative re-definitions of feminism that anti-feminists have concocted and propagated, to the point that although they might actually favor most principles of feminism, they think of the term itself as a nasty word. I know I'm the beneficiary of male privilege. I also know I'm the beneficiary of white privilege. And educated middle class privilege. I understood that, to an extent, by observing others who lacked the same privileges. But now that I'm old enough to face age discrimination (only occasionally, but it has happened), it's easier to feel what it's like to face discrimination personally. I know that it's a lot worse for women, non-whites, working poor, etc., but after getting a taste of it personally it's more than just an intellectual understanding. - - - - - This_dude: There's a term for what things like the "Slut Walk", Bitch magazine, and so forth mean. It's called "reappropriation" -- devaluing a pejorative word as a pejorative by using it with pride. I have friends who call themselves "queer" -- once a strongly negative term for LGBT people, now reclaimed as a term of pride. It happens in politics; "tree-hugger" was once a term of scorn for environmentalists, but now it's used with pride. "Obamacare" was coined as an expression to tie a political program the right assumed would be unpopular to the president, but it ended up being generally popular and gives Obama credit for something that was invented by the right. "Nerd" was reappropriated,* starting around the time of the film Revenge of the Nerds, and some related words have also lost their negative meaning. Some racial terms have been reappropriated too, though those are controversial enough that I'll assume that it's obvious what I mean. * My wife recently described me as a "sexy nerd type" to a stranger; there was a time when "sexy nerd" would have been an oxymoron.
