Blogging etiquette?

Since joining this site, I have fell in love with the blogs and the advice line. Seriously I get lost on here. There's so many different ideas and thoughts, that my brain has mini orgasms every time I hop on.
Sometimes I come across a blog that makes me think. I don't comment because it would be lengthy or it's read only . I wouldn't want to be disrespectful and hog the whole page. But I love to debate. I love any forum where a free exchange of ideas can take place.
So my question is: is it rude to use another's blog as a jump off point? Should I ask them first? What's the etiquette here in blogland?

I thought about that...Maybe this question would have been more effective as a poll? Thanks for the comment.

Well, I wouldn't want to be rude. Plus I'm using their thoughts as a platform to jump off from. Sooo..

I think it's polite to reference it in your own blog but it's not required...sometimes I forget where I saw something lol but I will usually then say that I did see the idea in another blog...
Bloggers are generally an easy going bunch of regular people. We welcome ideas to talk about so have fun!

I would reference it. If it was something I wanted to pimp I would ask first though. Sometimes people tend to hog a blog post...which can get a tad annoying. Mind you most people will send a message asking if it is ok to run a debate on a post (if it's your post) but then again some dont....and are just seemingly there to argue because they never post on any other entries.\Sorry...that got a tad long

Just so you know...
TOU (the rules of the site) prohibit you using someone's profile name, a link to a post, or a blog name, WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE BLOGGER/PROFILE.
Now, most of us like it when you reference us. You might notice that some bloggers have a "permission" post, where you go on and give permission to the blogger to use any of your stuff in any way. I had it on my header until the headers started acting wiggy and disappearing. I just had a blanket permission for anyone to use anything from my blog but not photos.

Having said all that, write one comment, if it is long, apologize on other people's blogs for being wordy. Try NOT to make multiple comments on multiple posts. People call that "pissing all over someone's comments". Be brief, and sometimes you can say within your comment "I have so much to say, that I will make this a post on my blog. I hope you are ok with that" and then just go and do it.

Now it's my turn, sorry for being so wordy on your comments section.
Good post!

I'm an academic so I'm always going to come down on the side acknowledging the source of an idea not your own. Blogs are a broadcast medium so, like a newspaper or magazine, ideas are going to trigger conversation, contemplation, and commentary. It can even take the form of satire or parody according to the US Supreme Court.

IMO, courtesy and custom say that you acknowledge the source. If I can't remember the source, I'll say something like,"I saw this is a blog but can't remember which one. If this is you, please let me know".

is it rude to use another's blog as a jump off point? .... It's not rude.

Should I ask them first? .... No.

What's the etiquette here in blogland? ... No etiquette. You spotted an idea in something someone noted, you run with it.

Soooo.... fuck'em. They didn't see the new path, they probably don't even know you exist. Take the idea and run with it.

Tried to link it, but it didn't link. But i wrote the post # and encouraged others to read through it so they can join the debate, if they want to.
