Single handedly pissing off the world, one person at a time.

So, yah....

I was on lunch today listening to a coworker loudly ranting about how there are people out there that think this COVID-19 thing is being drastically blown out of proportion.

I raised my hand.

"You think that too?!"

He pretty much yelled it at me.

"Yep. I fully believe there is something to be worried about, and we should be doing what we can to remain healthy and safe, but I don't think we are going about this the right way."

He was outraged, threw his arms up in the air, and started yelling.

"Don't get all upset and mad at me, I'm not forcing my opinion on you. I'm just saying, it kind of feels to me like all this focus was meant to distract us from something else."

I resonded to him in a soothing tone, not argumentative, and I was surprised to hear the three other coworkers who were in the breakroom with us agree with me. We all agreed that COVID-19 was something to be concerned about, but shutting down the United States of America wasn't going to eliminate the disease.

I changed the conversation at that point, but he didn't stick around for long.

On an unrelated side note: I'm listening to my downstairs neighbor complaining right now to another neighbor. She's apparently "had it" with the apartments and is planning on moving.

Woo Hoo!

Apparently whoever is filling in for apartment manager is getting on her case for her multitude of animals and smoking.

All that below being said the fact remains that a virus is unpredictable in some ways such as mutations that can turn it more or less deadly. There are more than just the elderly and health compromised that are dying, though in this case health compromised might be something as simple as having a blood type that is more susceptable to getting a more serious infection and poor outcome from the virus. There is the infected kids who are having complications that show up after the virus has been through their systems.

All and all it may have been much less disruptive and less expensive to have isolated the ones most suseptable and let the virus pass through the general population unrestrained but it is unlikely that would have worked well. For proof I offer up the atrocious track record of the elderly homes in this pandemic so far.

What if the percentage were no different? No matter how many people were infected, carriers, recovered... and the percentage of deaths were still the same? My state spent millions of dollars building centers for the COVID-19 patients and they remain unused. Not a single patient. In my state the death rate is less than 1% according to the stats on the CDC website.
Well first off percentages are relative numbers and therefore the effect depends on what the percentage represents. A percentage of the number of infected who died versus a percentage of the population who died are different numbers. The whole reason for the isolation actions was and still is to limit the rate of spread so as not to overload the medical facilities and personnel. The ideal situation is to starve the virus out by not allowing it to propagate freely. That would end the covid 19 pandemic. Keeping in mind the people most vulnerable to the virus are our older generations and the people with health conditions. Who wants to be the one that gave their mother or father a deadly virus? I said in an earlier post I made on the subject that quaratining the general population would be an outrageously expensive process and very difficult to do given all the considerations. On top of that the virus was already wide spread across the country before they even considered the process and they were wasting time worried about the cruise ships and the home coming plane loads while the virus was breaking out nationwide. I said then the better process might be to isolate the elderly and the health compromised and let the virus spread through the population to create the herd immunity but anyway you look at it there are no ideal situations that don't have catches and exceptions. When you have travel allowed between countries and counties the possibility of the virus being reintroduced to an otherwise virus cleared country or area, then you undo the gains everybody worked and isolated for and the process has to continue indefinitely or be abandoned. So all in all the fact that the facilities weren't used to the full extent they were capable of is a good sign that the isolation did it's purpose and slowed the spread rate. But keep in mind nothing is over yet and things can easily pick up speed again and still overload the healthcare facilities. As to the final percentages of the population effected I said it looked like it would be similar to a really bad flu season and kill the same sectors of the population the main difference is there is no vaccine to take so no one has any protection therefore the final death toll is likely to be higher if no isolation is done.

Just imagine what the death toll might be like if there had been no isolation with a highly contagious disease running wild through the population...kind of like the black plague or something only worse.

I think it is a Republican plot to get rid of all the older generation who are on S.S. and the people who have health issues that are costing the health inurance industries lots of money to cover their healthcare and medications. That way they can cut the government costs and claim they are balancing the budget while making billions for the health insurance corporations that donate to them so they can give the wealthy even bigger tax breaks...

I think some of folks attitude is media driven and you have to do your own research to find truthful facts. I am fortunate to tlive in a state whose numbers are low but increasing. But I also live in one of 2 counties where the number of cases is raging AND where the majority of the bitching is about the Stay Home order. Massachusetts right next door is a major hell hole right now and they are coming here to "escape" Well what's going to happen to our numbers by August>>> yep
I live in a state where the governor lifted the order partially on part of the state, and not the other. Where I live it's been lifted and it's been CRAZY here as we are over run by all those people escaping the counties where it isn't lifted. They've come here because in their false sense of security, they think it's safe up here. Entire families shopping, nobody wearing masks, the locals can't even get into the establishments that are slowly opening back up. At work Friday I had a women tell me... 'You guys must be thrilled that everything is opening back up so you'll finally get some business.'

Um, no.

I agree... It is something to be taken seriously. But, we must be able to continue to live and work and pay our bills. Those that are at risk need to be sheltering at home. We should be taking measures to protect them... The rest of us need to be safe but keep things going.

In a developed country in the 21st Century, 100,000 deaths is significant and- per some models- up to 50% more than would have occurred had the Federal government brought its *greatness* to bear just a couple of weeks earlier than it chose to. Perhaps more critically, had our lock-down (as inadequate as some insist it was) NOT been put in place, we would likely be discussing 200,000 deaths and a completely-collapsed heath care system, rather than one that has *merely* been stressed to its limits.

Does anyone else see even a smattering of irony in grievances about being inconvenienced by a two-month *disruption* being aired on a web-based sex site? We are literally rewriting the "Theory of the Leisure Class".
A 2 month disruption? Where I live, a lot of my community lives paycheck to paycheck. Several businesses closed as a result of this, permanently, and a lot of people are struggling to find income. I put a woman through orientation on Friday who is now living in her car as a result of this disruption. Leisure Class my fucking ass...

I agree with you! Definately a concern, but blown way out of proportion because all the stats are monitored and publicized. How many people have died of the regular flu in 2018 or 2019.... a lot! How about Pnemonia? A Lot! There is a strategy going on in the background and all this is meant to distract us from it. I see so many conflicting stats it's ridiculous. As for "justaguyinalaska", I think he has spent too much time in his igloo!!
I just did a little research today... I was curious to see what the leading cause of death was according to the CDC. Heart Disease.... With a death total of 647,457 in 2017. (Most recent stats) Which means, about 54,000 people die from heart disease each month. Cancer was only a few thousand behind heart disease.... Lots of stuff out there killing us off, it's just not as news worthy.

The president just toured a manufacturing plant downstate from me and refused to wear a mask. He and our governor are stale-mating right now and it's frustrating! She extended our shelter at home order 2 more weeks. It feels frustrating.

Out of the multitude of people I know and come into contact with... One former co-worker who now lives downstate was diagnosed. She had cold symptoms, quarantined at home, and is now among the ranks of the recovered. She posted about her entire experience on FB, which I thought was great, because all we hear about on the news is the worst case scenarios. Not every case is a worst case scenario.
