I cried when I first saw Born Free , and I cried when John Wayne died in The Cowboys. The last time I cried during a movie was in Saving Private Ryan, when the chaplain arrives at the Ryan farm to tell Mrs. Ryan that 3 of her sons have been killed in combat. The way Mrs. Ryan collapses on her front porch always gets me.

I used to read a lot. I've been doing more movies and streaming lately. I love The Green Mile. I'm a long time fan of Steven King. I'm waiting for the Amazon streaming version of the Dark Tower. I think I read it would be about book 4 - Wizard and Glass. The Dark Tower movie that came out a couple of years ago did some really weird stuff when compared to the books. It didn't make a lot of sense.

I should read more than I do but most books I pick up these days don't catch, or hold, my interest. In preparation for an airline journey recently, I was perusing the "New Releases" shelf at my local library and picked up a murder mystery that sounded intriguing. Luckily, I picked out a backup. I was waiting at the gate and pulled out the murder mystery. About 7 pages into it, I put it back in the briefcase. The 7th grade reader level was bad enough the but the writing? It just couldn't hold me at all. (The backup? "Cream City Chronicles" by John Gurda. It's a collection of his columns from the Milwaukee Journal about the history of Milwaukee.) Best book in the last six months for me was "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI". I admit, I'm kind of a sucker for biography and history. As I was reading it, I remember a segment of the story in the James Stewart film "The FBI Story" from 1959. The movie butchered the Osage Murders story (what a shock) so it was great to learn the real history. It's a fascinating look into a shameful episode in American history. I've read the entire Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. certainly not Pulitzer material, in fact, I describe them as "junk food books" because you know that you shouldn't be reading such books and shouldn't be eating cheese curls but once you open the bag, they're as good as gone. Same with junk food books, you just can't NOT turn the next page. Is it okay to admit I devoured the entire Harry Potter series?
