Living Well with Your Black Neighbors

It's no secret I live in a ghetto. It's called the "Baby Ghetto". I do so by choice; the cost of living here allows me freedom to go on road trips and buy the occasional piece of climbing gear.. I get to park the Skeeter outside my front door. What's not to like? All those scary black and Hispanic people? The dumpsters on the curbs? the trash pickers?

Across the street a Jeep Cherokee is up on blocks. Been there for months. My upstairs neighbors are raising two young and have a jacked Chrysler occupying on the parking spaces in the units dedicated parking. Apparently the engine blew up on the way to Laughlin; they owe money on it so they hope it will get repossessed. Months have gone by. The repo guys must know it's not worth the cost of a tow. There is a tacit neighborhood watch and people trying to deal drugs get ratted out pretty quickly. Then LV Metro shows up.

Next door to me a black family has 5 and two adults packed into a 2 bedroom upstairs unit. The are all well mannered, the teenage daughters are gorgeous. The husband works 2 jobs. Bartender by night and painter by day. Many people around here live on fixed incomes.

If you were raised white middle class or anything WASP best to leave your preconceptions someplace else before you enter the area. The play in the street. Afternoons there is often an impromptu basketball game going on; sometimes soccer or touch football . Dogs and cats run loose at times.

It's amazing how friendly and open the residents are. However there are a couple black neighbors for whom you should have respect. The reside in the outside storage closets where I keep tools and automotive supplies.

from March 2106: "My outside neighbor has grown about 30% since I first saw her in the outside storage closet a month ago. It's pretty cool to watch her. Another Black Widow tried to move in and now that spider is gone. She had some prey webbed onto the door and she was quiet territorial about it. Now I find her hanging in her web at night chillin'..The flash scared her and she ducked into the crack between the shelf and the wall"

I know. I looked up Durham Region. I've lived in small towns.
Las Vegas, once you are off the strip, is collections of small neighborhoods and cinder-block surrounded communities. The block walls serve to block the winds and blowing sand. Some people feel they add security. I'd say that assumption is flawed. Some of the older"grandfathered in zoning" allows for neighborhoods to have horses, chickens. Las Vegas has more and more age restricted (over 55) communities...somewhat like Durham. That is not for me.
Where I am is a 3 street neighborhood which never got swallowed by some corporate REIT. No home owners association here. Blowing sand and fine dust is pervasive.
