Barbaric acts? Brunei invokes death penalty by stoning for gay sex or adultery by either husband or wife cheating: Associated press release by the CBC. New Laws trigger outcry from countries , celebrities . New Islamic criminal laws that took effect in Brunei on Wednesday , punishing gay sex and adultery by stoning offenders to death have triggered an outcry from countries ,rights groups and celebrities far beyond the tiny Southeast Asian nations shores. The penalties were provided for under new sections of Brunei's Shariah Penal Code. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah instituted the code in 2014 to bolster the influence of Islam in the oil rich monarchy of around 430.000 people . two thirds of whom are Muslim.Even before 2014 homosexuality was already punishable in Brunei by a jail term of up to 10 years.The first stage of the Shariah penal code included fines or jail for offences such as pregnancy out of wedlock or failing to pray on Fridays. But under the new laws which apply to and foreigners even if they are not Muslim .those found guilty of gay sex could be stoned to death or whipped .Adulterers risk death by stoning as well , while thieves face amputation of a right hand for the first offence and a left foot as their second offence.. "Living in Brunei we already knew that our sexual identity is taboo and should not be expressed .We already felt belittled before a law came into place, " says a 23 year old member of the LGBTQ community who wanted to be identified as Kun out of fear of reprisal from Authorities..." now with it we feel even smaller and the ones who could potentially oppress us have more opportunity to do so and as they want." Celebrities boycott hotels and Canada is deeply concerned : Celebs including George Clooney, Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres have voiced opposition to the new laws and have rallied a boycott of nine hotels in the USA and Europe with ties to Hassasal who is still Sultan.." Are we really going to help murder innocent citizens?" George Clooney wrote on Deadline Hollywood Thursday ..Clooney said that while you cant shame " murderous " regimes , " you can shame them , the banks and the institutions that do business with them." Canada has pleaded and urged Burnei to put a stop to the new laws whilst United States , joined United Kingdom , Germany and France on Tuesday to also halt plans on the new law.. " Brunei's new Penal Code is barbaric to the core imposing archaic punishments for acts that shouldn't even be crimes " , this statement made by Phil Robertson , the deputy Asia Director for Human Rights Watch..Amnesty International researcher Rachel Chhoa-Howard described the laws as " vicious " and has asked the communities to condemn them. Personal opinion of mine " seems the smarter we get , the stupider we get, all brain function ceases and IQ's drop sharply." |

2019 and that is allowed to happen. Another place I will never step foot on. I am so thankful I was born in this, by some opinions, awful country. I don’t usually care for boycotts. Maybe this is one that needs to happen.

This content makes me so sad. I've always thought of the phrase "Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone". As a human species, everyone has at some point in their lives made a mistake. Let me be clear....I do not believe that homosexuality is a mistake, but rather the people that are willing to chastise others for their personal views and choices are making an enormous one....they are presuming that they know what is right in the world according to them....and their ignorance. I really hope that this type of brutality gets changed with a strong offence by the rest of the world. I understand that each country has their own laws to abide by, but when the line crosses over to severe forms of brutality on mankind, we need to step up. No one deserves this type of punishment. And though there are horrible people out there that technically SHOULD deserve it, we should not be making those decisions. Two wrongs don't make a right. Thank you for sharing this piece. It's heart breaking and all we can do is embrace life and be better people. XO

I lived in the south Philippines and traveled to Brunei- People who practice Islam also do sex with young girls- boys- animals- if you aren't a Muslim then you are infidel- I protested about letting Muslims into the states because they will not assimulate- (sp) when you read the Koran it say to infiltrate and conquer- in our congress there are 2 women who are Muslim- as soo as they could get to a mic they trashed Israel- and one called our president a mf'er and to impeach him- so much for respecting the oath they took when inducted into office-

It's the choice of the people to allow their government to rule over them. If they don't like living under such laws, then they need to do something about it. Outsiders, like us, could try to help. Could try to impose our beliefs upon them. But at the end of the day, if they don't believe strongly enough to stand up on their own, then anything we do will only make the situation worse. They have to take the first steps if they want their corner of the world to be a better place. It sucks, but revolution has never come easily. And you certainly can't force it on someone. Time and again we have tried. Police actions. Wars. Atrocities on all sides because its just too confusing for everyone if it's not coming from home and from the heart. "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." Even an herb as sweet as basil is nothing without its bite. Lord Basil
