Hmmm always wondered where the term originated. Learned something new today. Thanks, although I must admit, I have never been a fan of the expression.

OK so the initial thought was hump day and that picture is a dangerous combination

But I had to look because they actually referred to it as a dictionary + "1785".

The first official English dictionary (Oxford) wasn't published until 1850±.

The first Law dictionary (Black's) was published in 1891.

Previously, there were about 20 English versions dating back to the late 1500's.

I place significance of dictionaries (English) in authoring of the U.S. Constitution finalized in 1787.

To actually understand and comprehend the Constitution - it must be read in the language and meaning of words used at the time it was penned. Essentially, you can't interpret the document using today's dictionary for many more reasons that the following.

The number of words in Old English is about 50,000
Today - its about 1,000,000

- although only 300K-500K get published - and most of what does get published resembles a bastardized acceptance of slang.
