I'm not gonna make it....Oh, wait!!

Do you tell people story's about yourself , that maybe make you look foolish? Things that might be a little embarrassing? I was talking with some neighbors last night. Had over, grandsons, and we were all doing christmas lights. One of them mentioned a near death experience he had. So of course I told him one of mine...but his response was "man I'd be too embarrassed to tell anyone that story". I laughed and told him, maybe he needed a little work on his self esteem. Not sure he liked that. LOL To me, the ability to laugh at yourself is an important part of life.

So, I thought I'd share the story.

There is a lake near San Antonio, called Canyon Lake. They call it that because they dammed up the river and it created a lake throughout all the surrounding canyons. Lots of area's around the shore drop off to really deep water.

As teenagers, we used to go camping there on the weekends. 10 to 20 rowdy ass teens, with lots of weed, plenty of alcohol. Funny, in those days, we never got hassled for partying there. Off the shoreline where we camped, about 500 yards out was a island. If you knew where to walk, or the water levels were down, you could walk out a peninsula all the way to the island. Which is what a of us had done that day.

When it was time to head back, a friend and I decided, we were going to cut across the "shortcut". Just swim back. Hell, couldn't be more than a half mile. And both being strong swimmers we thought, no problem. Wonderful logic seeing how we were both toasted out of our gourds. About half way, I start getting a cramp in one of my legs. I tell my buddy and we slow down a bit. Another hundred yards, and my other leg starts cramping. Being a avid swimmer, I realize at this point I'm in trouble. I holler out, and my buddy stops. We're treading water trying to figure out what to do. He suggests floating for a bit. Which is the perfect thing to do, except I have no body fat. I "float" about a foot under the water. But I try a dead man float anyway. Cramps aren't going away and I realize I have to make a run for it.

So we take off again. About 100 yards or so to the shoreline, my sides are cramping. Arms are going jello'd. Legs are just dragging along behind me like anchors. I out to my buddy. We talk for a sec, he tells me he's about to go down too and can't help. I tell him, I understand, and he should continue on. Told him, I couldn't go anymore and think this is it. He's looking scared. I always figured I'd die young, and I'm not half as scared as I should be. I tell him to take off, I'm gonna let go and just sink. He looks at me, can't seem to find the words or the breath to say anything, then takes off. I roll over on my back. I take a few seconds to look around, remember looking up at the sky. Beautiful. Then, just let go and start sinking.

I sank for just a few seconds when I hit bottom. We were in about 7 feet of water. I hit the bottom and sorta crawled a bit ..then pushed off to the surface. Grabbed some air and hollar for my buddy. Then sink again, pull myself along the bottom, and repeat. Did this twice more and realized I'm now standing in a little over 5 foot of water. I'm hollering at my friend, but he won't stop. Later he told me he thought I was drowning and didn't want to watch. LOL

Finally I yell out, STAND UP DUDE, we're in the shallow water here. He finally stopped and turned to look at me. We started laughing . Laughed so hard we almost drowned again. Walked into the shore where I had to lay for a half hour before I could walk back the hundred yards to the camp. Luckily, my friends all brought me some more beer, lit up another joint and had their fill of laughing at me and my buddy. We laughed right along with them.

I always remember not having a problem laughing at myself. I did some pretty laughable things.

It also drove home something my drill sergeant dad used to say to us. It's never over, till it's over. Don't quit.

You were quite the adventurous one my friend, I am so glad you made it through that horrific ordeal. And you know its good to be able to laugh at ourselves as we would be quite boring if we couldn't right..

And I think you were right to tell your neighbor that, I hope the evening was a good one and you got all your lights up..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

The mom in me is thinking, omg, you were so lucky. Sometimes, I just can't turn off that voice, lol.

I can laugh at myself and do it often, and I will share it especially with my kids. If it was more stupid than funny, I might share it, depends upon how embarrassing, lol.

I didn't really find anything in that story that would be considered embarrassing. Until the epilogue. Another beer? Another toke? THAT'S what gave you the cramps to begin with! Dumb-ass kid!

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Think I was just really good at making poor decisions. LOL

Think I'm gonna have to buy more lights. It's not bright enough yet.

When I look back on it..I often wonder how far I was away from one of the drop offs. Where I wouldn't have hit bottom.

My mom rarely knew what we did. She knew I was out of control..but I never gave her the specifics. Figured she'd just worry.

I'd like to think sharing some of the stupid stuff I did, helped prevent my kids from being so crazy.

Yeah, and knowing us, we hadn't eaten anything either. Liquid diets were pretty common for us. Then pig out at dinner. LOL

We were idiots.

I gave up weed in my mid 20's. Tried it a few times since the divorce and just didn't enjoy it. Makes me tired, hungry and feels like my IQ drops in half. LOL

But the friends , wine or beer and lots of laughing keeps me young.

Since no one was harmed it's definitely a good story to be telling and laughing about. I've told people about stupid stuff I've done and it's always good to laugh about it and let others enjoy your crazy escapades.

Yeah..I thought it was one of my least embarrassing story's. LOL The neighbor was shocked that I'd admit to making stupid choices when I was 18.

That was my take. Where's the harm in sharing a laugh, even if it's at your own expense. Anyone who knows me , know's I did a bunch of stupid crazy stuff.

I rarely tell this story but years ago I was surfing at home and fell off the board...got caught by the rip tide and had to be rescued by lifeguards.... I was a good swimmer and when my pals heard I never heard the end of it.

Or...how to avoid the stupid and crazy situations we put ourselves in. Think my kids are cooler than I was. They didn't turn out half as silly as I was back then.

Well I was seriously trying not to live past 30. I don't know exactly when or where that thought came from, but I do remember thinking might as well live hard and die young.

Now, I'm sorta glad I failed at that one.

Great story Bro. 😉. Had to use that phrase. LoL. I am glad you lived to tell the tale. I had a kid I grew up with drown in a local lake. He was my brother's best friend. He and some friends went out on a boat at night. They were drinking and smoking, stoned. They all had jeans and boots or sneakers on and probably jackets. I was told Scott had a leather jacket on. So when the boat somehow tipped over from their rough housing , they all fell out. Scott with a leather jacket, boots and jeans was not able to swim. The other guys made it to shore. The lake is named Crystal lake and I always shudder to think of him drowning there. Sorry to be a downer on the subject. I had a few kids I grew up with not make it to age 20 for a variety of reasons. I suppose other folks have similar folks in their lives that died way too young.

Thanks for sharing that. It is rough losing friends at a young age. I went to a few friends funerals growing up. Fights, car wrecks. Never pretty and never fun. There is no rhyme or reason to it, it's just what it is.

Thanks for sharing that.
