Canoeing

Canoeing
written March 7th, 2021

I have spent the last few days
canoeing the Mackenzie River
making the journey in a
with maps and words.

As I read it takes back
to canoeing in my youth
the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
along the northern border of Minnesota.

I can feel the paddle
pulling through the water
and hear the loons
crying at night.

The land around
almost untouched since
Huron, Chippewa, Cree
Dakota and Ojibwa eyes
were the ones
that had ever seen it.

Now I in thought and memory
the clear cold waters of the lakes
the portages through forested hills
taking me from one gem
of a lake and a memory
to the next.

 Thank you to my pastors in high school and college, who were brave enough to lead a youth who had hardly seen a river or lake on these canoe trips that I still remember today.

 I will be happy when the ice goes out on the lake I live on in Northern Minnesota. Can't wait to get my paddle back in the water !

I remember talk of "ice out" dates. The farther north you went, the later they got. Maybe the waiting, makes it that much sweeter when you can canoe again. Thank you for reading me and commenting!

 To be free to float down stream
Paddle up stream
Land where you may
To see the sights of nature
Smell the fresh air
To feel the sunshine on your face
Water between your toes
Enjoy enjoy for it will not be here forever.

That is what this poem left me thinking about. I never would have ended up anywhere canoeing if left to my own inclinations. How many times have people left memories like this, and not had any idea. Thank you for reading me and commenting!
