For any of you who have been here for any length of time, we're all aware of and have seen the profiles who have copied and pasted the whole "warning" bulletin that goes like this...
"**WARNING: Any institutions using this site or any of its associated sites for studies or projects - You do NOT have my permission to use any of our profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy and will be subject to legal ramifications.!!!!**
This whole stink was generated years ago when apparently students at Syracuse University set out to do a project by taking polls or doing some sort of assignment by gathering information on the site. Since then, the whole "Syracuse University" part of the warning dropped from the cookie cutter, and we've been left with what's shown above.
I question who enforces this...or if there is any legitimate enforcement to even be had? True, in the most technical sense of paging through the legal mountains of incomprehensible terms and copyright material, then I suppose there is friction. However, from my understanding of it, when anyone here posts content, that content then belongs to this site under copyright, which would seem to then cancel out the whole "You do NOT have my permission to use any of our profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future.". We seemingly don't need your permission, since your profile, pictures or content is then property of this site (not you), as described by the terms "are owned by or licensed to us". This also seems to go for the whole "Any institutions using this site or any of its associated sites for studies or projects"....so now someone who puts disclaimers in text, magically thinks it's legally bound to deny the whole entire site and it's people here from using content for personal/non-commercial/assignment/project sort of use???? HUH??? SCREW YOU! If I want to do a personal assignment, study or poll on this site or by any members of this site, I'm perfectly in my right to do so. Even for those who do violate some terms and conditions, it would seem that to legitimately enforce this, you'd therefore have to channel your concerns to this site or through the third party copyright holder who owns the rights to your content. Lol.
Here's something else that tickles my mind to no end (legalities, terms and copyright mumbo jumbo stuff aside for now). The bulletin says "You do NOT have my permission to use any of our profile or pictures in any form or forum both current and future. If you have or do, it will be considered a serious violation of my privacy..". So let me get this straight for a second...
1 .) You sign up on a site (by choice) which it's primary design is for social interaction of one kind or another with random members of the PUBLIC who use this site GLOBALLY and who can look you up from any place in the world. Not only is that a perfectly legit use of the ability of the functions/tools on this site, but it's to be expected that people look you up and read your profile and look at your media. Your entire intent is in knowing the world is going to be looking at you and reading about you....soooo how is this a violation of your privacy when you willingly submit details and media?
2 .) Most people willingly post pics of nudes or intimate scenes within their media for THE WORLD TO VIEW! So, you post nudes or sexual acts purposely for the world to view PUBLICLY, yet there is some violation to your privacy going on if some other member of the PUBLIC simply looks at random people up and takes a poll or some other assignment for personal and/or non-commercial use? Too funny!
That's like going to a private airport which is publicly accessible, crashing your helicopter and then expecting some level of privacy (within that public setting) that the footage doesn't make it to the evening news.
It's like going to your local supermarket which is privately owned and is publicly accessible, shoplifting, then expecting a level of privacy to be kept.
Too funny! True, this site has an obligation to protect it's members, the content and the liability stuff.....however, don't think that you have some magical level of privacy when you knowingly and willingly come to a PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE social media/personals site like this and then expect some reasonable level of privacy to occur when people want to use your info or media for private use. You are in the public, even though you're doing so from an online source. I agree, that certain permissions must be granted if something is looking to be published elsewhere or something like that for business or profit, but not for petty personal use. That just makes zero sense and so does this whole"warning" bulletin that has been floating around on thousands of people's profiles for years now.
It irritates me. If I'm missing something here or whatever, I'm an open ear.

i have been getting a lot of im's with strange square dots coming through like this from others. what is this? is this normal here and is anyone else getting these too?
