 Dusk is a magical time. Feels like nature around you is holding her breath. Hushed. Birds deep in the forest have earned their right to instill into the hush their calls to one another. What are they communicating? Are they calling young ones back to the nest? Are they calling to a mate? Their calls echo in the stillness...and as you sit quietly and listen...you close your eyes...and you start to hear more....the sound of the creek bubbling on it's way beyond the scrub grass. rustling of dry grass just beyond the cedar that stands tall behind you...a snake? No, you shiver involuntarily, you hate snakes...it was a rabbit, or a squirrel...or a mouse. the breeze rustles leaves above you. you feel the soft caress of the cool dusk air on your cheek, breathe in the moist earth scent, hear your own heartbeat...you breathe in slowly....exhale...smile and open your eyes to see the last rays of the setting sun kissing the farthest reaches of the forest on the other side of the river.
You realize you forgot to bring a flashlight and reluctantly rise to head home in the darkness settling over you. Silently, you speak a thank you for allowing you to experience this small moment of contentment You hope there will be many more to come.
