VAERS And The Anti-Vaxxers

Apparently, I can't seem not at the train wreck that is the anti vax / anti mandate movement. As a result, this morning, I read yet another mass of right wing extremist bullshit from another blogger. His entries are more than copy paste from one right wing outlet or another, along with his own regurgitation of other talking points. Lots of exclamation points as well. In any case, one item that these dip shits keep using support their idiotic claims is VAERS data. Because I don't feel like summarizing, below is a blurb from the VAERS website.

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is a national early warning system detect possible safety problems in U.S. licensed vaccines. VAERS is co-managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) following vaccination.

The VAERS data includes information such as vaccine type, manufacturer, adverse reaction observed a vaccine, and whether the patient died. And seems that most of the propaganda includes cries of " at the data!! See how many people died as a result of getting a Covid vaccine!" The claim the aforementioned blogger copy pasted almost ten thousand people died from getting a Covid shot and scores more had significant adverse reactions. If you've read my blog before, you know what I did; I downloaded all six hundred megabytes of this year's data and went through .

At first glance, the data does appear be quite damning, with over seven thousand five hundred deaths reported as a result of receiving a Covid vaccine. Of the 600k+ reported issues, over 97% resulted from one of the Covid vaccines.

However, if you dive a bit deeper into the data, which includes a description field for each report, it becomes a bit questionable. For example, fourteen of those deaths were due to gunshot wound! While I'm not a doctor, I'd say getting shot, or shooting yourself, isn't a potential side effect of any vaccine. I found more than one instance where someone received the vaccine after contracting Covid, then died. Yeah, pretty sure it the Covid that killed them and not the vaccine. As for the others, most of what I read indicated comorbidity and other circumstances that would either preclude the death being a result of the vaccine or not be able to exclude other factors. The average age of those died seventy four, which should give you an indication of the landscape.

Many of the reportable conditions I found suffered by those didn't die weren't exactly horrific. Things like headaches were the most common. were a I read where they seemed be okay until a week or more after being vaccinated, then began suffer something completely unrelated, like carpal tunnel syndrome.

But can you ignore the sheer of reported issues with the Covid vaccines? In a word, yes. Because what I haven't shared is that anyone can make a report the VAERS system. Yes, some reports come from medical professionals, but literally anyone else can complete the input form and their issue, real or not, included in the database. Indeed, the majority of the records I looked at either had a first person narrative of symptoms or the narrative one or two words. Surely, I'm not suggesting that the anti vax crowd loading the database up with as many false claims as they could? Yeah, I'm suggesting that. In fact, anyone thinks otherwise is more than a naive. Consider this as a sanity ; how many of you were aware VAERS even existed until recently? Clearly one or more entities has been exhorting their fellow anti vaxxers upload reports .

If you a further indication as how patently unreliable and indefensible this data is, consider that not even the traditional right wing outlets, like Fox, OAN, and Newsmax mentioned in several months. Even they know 's garbage and would get rightfully blasted for basing any conclusions on .

The CDC has said they do their best remove patently false or fraudulent records, but the fourteen people with gun shot wounds speaks volumes about their success.

In conclusion, you may see references this blog elsewhere, because I plan on making fun of anyone continues use the VAERS data substantiate anything beyond how easy is sway even a government run database support your own stupid ideals.

A quick addendum, because I thought this worth sharing. I had the data file open, trying decide whether save my analysis, when I happened on another data skewing trend. Almost 2,000 incidents listed "none" as the symptoms. Sure, that data should be used as a basis for arguing how unsafe the vaccines are.

What's in your data?

Great post.
Given that millions and millions across the world have been vaccinated with a variety of vaccines - some better than others - the relative lack of serious side-effects blows a hole in the anti-vaxxers' arguments.
I'm not saying there are no side-effects and I'm not saying for some these side-effects are very serious and even fatal, but without vaccination covid would have led to many, many more deaths and disabling symptoms.
The West just need to give vaccines to poorer countries who can't afford them. Because without us all (or nearly all) being vcaccinated, we're forever exposed to the ravages of covid and its never-ending and maybe one day vaccine-resitant variants.
I live with someone who refuses to be vaccinated. It makes me mad, not least because I don't know why he won't go vaccinated - he's a young adult. I guess it's because he thinks he's invincible. But I suspect he will get vaccinated when he realises that he can't get into bars, go to football games or travel abroad without being vaccinated; otherwise, he'll have to repeatedly pay for covid tests.

Thanks...the sad part is that no amount of facts and logic seems to matter to the anti vaxxers. They'll either ignore this post or move on to throw some other made up narrative at us.

Thank you. I won't pretend to have gone through all 200k+ records, but I thought it was about time someone finally looked at the data.

I have seen the post you refer to and any one can take text out of context and make a topic that is over the world and in reality is not even a grain of sand on the beach.. out of 10 of thousands of athletes that have gotten the vaccinations, you find a story and post it up front when in reality most likely no real evidence of the stated outcome. The vaccines still are not at a point that it will prevent covic, medicine is not perfect, each of us is an individual, they act some what different on each of us, but it is proven that the odds are so great that these vaccines prevent serious issues and death and they are free. (not really, (taxes)we all are paying) and around here they give you $100 to get one..
We all live and play the odds of life.. There are realistic levels that are to our advantage.. The odds are greater to get struck by lightening if you stand under a tall tree in a large opening, or the odds are greater of a deadly crash in your auto if you drive while impaired. A normal person understands the odds of life.. We play them each day..
I hope all that read your post do understand that we do have some here that like to sensationalize a small portion of the big picture to try to bend the minds of real people..
Thanks for your post. maybe it will open some eyes..

Ultimately, I don't have any skin in the game of whether vaccines are safe and effective (except for being vaccinated myself). I just go where the data takes me and in this case, the data was of no value to prove any point.
Unfortunately, I don't see any of this changing minds, so long as there's another right wing social media post someone's gullible enough to believe.

If you haven't already done so, go back and look at his latest entry. He's passed 'covid vaccines are bad' and gone full tin foil hat. At least he's not quite as insulting as some of the others.

Nothing is perfect in this World.....but given the data to date, vaccines help dramatically to prevent DEATH. From a purely selfish point of view, I do not want to DIE. With 20 some percent of the population refusing vaccination (in the U.S.), the virus will continue among us, and many more people will DIE, needlessly......

Keep sucking that cone, buddy....we all see you....

New2Midlo replies on 10/18/2021 8:14 am:
Excellent point - from a medical perspective, nothing is perfect, but the vaccines drop your likelihood of becoming seriously ill or dying to a statistical zero. Personally, I'd like to get my freedom back, but that's not possible, so long as the selfish amongst us remain that way.

I for one appreciate the counter opinion and the data-diving done to validate the findings and repudiate the case against vaccinations. Thank you for taking the time.

Its disheartening that the blogger so readily accepts and propagates this info. I also find it rather insensitive.

We just had another friend, 59 years old, die from covid yesterday. I simply don't understand at this point, with all that we know, why this continues. I'm in full agreement with Mr. OldStandard Dude above, the virus will continue, more people will die, including the anti-vaxers.

On the flip side, I wonder if government mandates are absolutely necessary. People tend to resist being told what to do and forced to obey. It can be counter-productive.
Now, if you're working at a company that requires vaccinations, that's a different story. Its company policy to ensure the safety and wellness of the workforce. You don't like it, you're free to work somewhere else.

Flattery will get you everywhere, Jules.

Don't forget dangerous on your list, describing the garbage being thrown out by the idiots.

While I agree with you on people doing the opposite of what the govt orders them to do, we're in unprecedented times, where extraordinary measures are required for the health of those who inhabit the planet. The only issue I see with relying on businesses to get their people vaccinated is that some are run by morons. So, you're back to square one.
