Headin'... For That West Island Train

Yesterday, I was driving my car, with my blogging buddy, FrankeeZee. I was skidding and slipping my way, through that huge northerly snow storm, you might have heard about. We were headed to the train station (out in the west island), where FrankeeZee's younger cousin Joey, was waiting for us. If you know this city, then you'd know, how messed up, winter driving can get. If you know the city a bit better, you'd know - it's mostly about the drivers here. They're all crazy !

FrankeeZee was just, bringing his lips, up to that cup, of scalding coffee, he'd just bought ( a mile ago)... when I slammed on my brakes. I was probably going faster, than I should have, but then again - so was everyone else. I was completely surprised, when that... guy... in the black 4 by 4, in front of me, decided to actually STOP - as the light turned yellow. I was even more surprised, that he stopped so quickly. "Fricken 4 by 4's !" I thought.

FrankeeZee's coffee, had already spilled over the rim and burned his lips, even before I could say anything.

"We're going to hit this guy Frankee. We're going to hit ... Come on baby...! Give me some space...!" I pleaded, as we slid forward.

Sure enough... The guy with the black 4 by 4, gave me some space and just edged out far enough, so that when I hit him - I might have been doing, barely 2 miles per hour. We bumped, with a little jolt... and a swear word from FrankeeZee. The guy in the black 4 by 4, opened his door. I looked at FrankeeZee, unbuckled my seatbelt and reached for my wallet. "Damn..." I thought. And then...

That guy, in the black 4 by 4, flicked his lit cigarette through the blowing snow and turned to look at me. With a shrug of his shoulders and a thumbs up, he leaned back into his truck, and closed his door. The traffic light had turned green and we all moved forward. I was pretty sure, there was no damage.

"Well... You were lucky Paul. You drive like an asshole. Slow down. You remind me of my cousin Joey."

"I am driving the same, speed, as everyone else... And how do I remind you of your cousin Joey? He's on probation. He just got out of jail for the 10th time."

"It was the third time... and that's my point. In fact...I asked him about that. You know... seeing as all his friends are getting married and having a family and stuff... I asked him, if it didn't bother him. And you know what he says ?"

I looked at FrankeeZee and blinked.

"He says - 'Sometimes... you just have to focus on your career'."

I looked at FrankeeZee and blinked again."None of what you said, has anything to do with me."

"I liked that story Paul. At least Joey sounds motivated. And hey...look at you. I don't know if you're happy, with your job... or whatever. You're always so crabby around me. Why is that?"

As I turned to answer... FrankeeZee yelled out ; "It's a red light Paul. Put on your fucking brakes and stop talking to me."

I slammed on the brakes. FrankeeZee's coffee splashed up on my dash. And there, in front of me, was that black 4 by 4 ... looming... again- as I slid closer... and closer...

"Oh shit !"

...............................................
So...
Do you (did you), live for your career or does (did) family, come first?
Does bad weather stop you from going places or do you just go through with your plans anyway?

Most of the time, the drivers in this city are reasonable - sort of. Although... the odds were in my favour, that no driver, wanted to get out of his car in a snow storm, to check out a scuff, on a 4 by 4 . I slowed down , after that 2nd time. You can actually stop, reasonably well - when it's snowing as hard as it was - true !

When I was younger and even as I was first married, my career came first. Long, crazy hours, were spent at the office. 😨
As soon as I had kids though, I would say that family came first - most of the time. 😊
Does that make sense? I never regretted either decision. It felt natural to me.🤔

Well... unless I've got plans to go to the beach,🏖️ then the weather really doesn't stop me from going anywhere.
With such a long winter, over here, if I waited for perfect weather - I would never go anywhere. I'd be a prisoner in my own home. 🏚️
That hasn't happened. If you've got the gear, you can dress for anything... No ? 😊

I stayed in Lachine for 10 days to visit family and could not believe the drivers there.. Nuts they are.. No care for others on the road and did not even pull over for ambulances.. Let's just say I was not impressed... No matter how fast everyone else is going does not mean one has to follow the Masses.Take the M off Masses and you have nothing but ASSES... and not the ones that are behind us neither...lol.

Sorry my coffee mate, drive for the conditions please.. I want you alive and safe my friend...

Lol ... True about the drivers here... Although with the penalties for driving like an idiot going up, quite a few drivers have reformed . . . I think...
I took your advice, and I did drive slower in that storm. Thing is though... you can get slaughtered here, if you don't keep up... But I get your point.
Driving in snow storms is so much fun though. I mean - if you can do it safely.
I guess you don't like that wintery stuff when you're driving?

I actually used to love driving in it..Front wheel drive baby and good snow tires along with staying within the limits and keeping my eyes on the road...Growing up here as well you know how to drive in it if you want to survive in it..

We don't really ever get any "bad weather" here. The roads in town may be icy once in a while, and then I drive like a turtle.

If there's a huge dump of snow, and it takes the plows a few days to get around, I can always walk 2 blocks to the grocery store for any essentials.

Otherwise, there's nothing I ever need bad enough that I can't wait another day or so, to go get it.

Honestly since I lost my family as you can say with the divorce then yes career has come first lots of times. However now that I ma taking care of my mom she comes first before the job if at all possible. One day I hope to have it behind me and spend my twilight years with an amazing person.

This is Montana we just head out and travel. You just have to be prepared for it!

I understand exactly what you're talking about, when you mention shifting attention from career and then, back to family. Best of luck with those challenges... 🙂

I think my family came first. I went part time at the PO in 93 and kept that 20 hour a week job until my youngest child was a junior in high school. When I went back full time I realized I gave up 20 hours a week for a few hundred dollars. I know I couldn’t stay part time and still have retired when I did but that was an eye opener.

I had to find a manageable work and lifestyle balance while raising my kids. I was fortunate to have a good support system. Priorities do change as you move through levels of your career and the value of 'me time' becomes more evident.
I can handle heat, wind, rain, cold and snow but icy conditions do restrict my activities. Winter is not my favourite season!

True... Priorities change through time.. and support teams are great! 😊👍
You don't like winter? ❄️ What if you dressed up properly, and were invited by the right person.. to go for walk.. along a frozen, forest path...?
The reward is a hot tea chocolate (or tea if you prefer), and... well.. Never mind.. You said you hated winter... Too bad.. 😔😘

Family first .... and I was very fortunate to have an employer that believed that, too.

As for bad weather - anyone living in the northern climes knows that if you wait for good weather you could be shut-in for weeks! I will admit that I'm enjoying the option of staying in.

I never said I hated winter. I love getting bundled up and going for walks, including hikes, knowing there is an appropriate reward when it's finished.

I live in Cali....not sure I need expand on driving here.

As far as my career. I don’t like what I do, wasn’t really my choice. Well, I’ll rephrase, it was my choice, but the option I was given never panned out. I was told if I quit my outside job and work in the fam business, I’d eventually stay home and raise my kids. They are all grown and I’m still working. I should have stayed in school and become a nurse. There would have been a sacrifice for us at the time. A need for everyone to step to the plate and support my education, but alas.....pretty much my family comes first.

Nope.. The CA thingy, pretty much says it all. Although.. You have your torrential rains, and storms.. Ooo and the earthquakes.. But I guess - your week, will pretty much be ruined, when that day comes... 😔🤔
I can hear what you're saying... about sacrifices... So... You would have been a nurse.. Well.. It would have been a worthy goal.. 😘😉

Thanks for sharing your concern. I am usually extra careful. There was just so much snow on the ground that I had to skid around....
We had rain at the end of the day.. and today it's all frozen up again.
But on the good side.. the sun is setting 1 minute later every day. 27 minutes longer since Jsn 1 It feels longer to me. Can you feel the days getting longer?

If I had been close enough to your balcony, I most surely would have quoted and recited someone... 🙂

Family first....though now, being that I live so far from family, it's a bit of a moot point. I do work hard to balance work and life, otherwise it would be too easy to put all my time into work.

Talking to co-workers, it sounds like the weather the last 2 weeks has presented quite the challenge with getting around! Glad you are safe!
