CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FIRST NATIONAL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS IN THE NCAA DIVISION I-A PLAYOFF:

THE BUCKEYES FROM THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!!

NOBODY gave them a chance. After losing starting quarterback Braxton Miller and a September game to Virginia Tech, everybody wrote off OSU and the Big 10 Conference.

What did Coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes do? WIN.

Second string quarterback J. T. Barrett proved to be just as good as Miller.

And the departure of last season's great rusher Carlos Hyde wasn't too bad. A new great rusher emerged from the shadows: Ezekiel Elliott.

And the defense emerged from that loss stingier than ever.

In the regular season finale against Michigan, Barrett was lost late in the game with a season-ending ankle injury.

NOBODY gave OSU a chance to get that fourth seed with a backup to a backup quarterback.

What did Coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes do? WIN BIG GAMES.

Third string quarterback Cardale Jones in his first three career starts: UNFAZED!

BIG 10 CHAMPIONSHIP against Heisman #3 running back Melvin Gordon and the Wisconsin Badgers: 59-0.

SUGAR BOWL against #1 seed Alabama and Heisman #2 wide receiver Amare Cooper: 42-35.

CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP against #2 seed Oregon and Heisman winning quarterback Marcus Mariota: 42-20.

For the first time in NCAA history, a team defeated the top 3 Heisman finalists in the same season, and the first to defeat two Heisman winners in the title game (The other: the 1/1/1969 Rose Bowl, when OSU defeated USC and O. J. Simpson). And for the first time in OSU's history, a rusher gained 200 or more yards in three straight games: Ezekiel Elliott, in the wins against Wisconsin (220), Alabama (230) and Oregon (246). Elliott's 36 carries, 246 rushing yards, and 4 touchdowns against Oregon are the most in a I-A title game.

And as for the polls, since the AP poll started in 1936, Meyer became the second coach (along with Nick Saban) to win national championships at multiple schools, and the second time that a team ranked 10 or lower in November has come back to win the I-A title. The other? The 1942 Buckeyes coached by Paul Brown. And OSU is now tied with national championships by four different head coaches (The others: Woody Hayes - 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970; and Jim Tressel - 2002).

As for the all-time series, OSU is a perfect 9-0 against Oregon, the best win percentage OSU has against any competitor in the 125 year history of OSU football. Ducks get goose egged again!

WELL DONE BUCKEYES!!!

No justice in (and less joy to) the world... RIP Taylor Negron

If the last name sounds familiar, it should.

Taylor Negron was the younger cousin of original Three Night lead vocalist Chuck Negron.

In the L.A. Theatre Works production of Annabelle Gurwitch's Fired: Tales of Jobs Gone Bad, Taylor recalls how his cousin was fired for his heroin habit and how, afterwards, his branch of the Negron family would switch off the radio whenever "Joy To The World" was played, because it was their song; he also recalled some of his earliest pre-fame firings. I re-listened to it a few hours ago.

Taylor has been in several notable films and TV shows since 1982, most will recognize him as the pizza delivery guy from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and as one of the doctors from the soap opera spoof Young Doctors in Love.

So it was with great sadness that I read this morning that Taylor had passed away at age 57 after a long battle with cancer, announced on video by cousin Chuck.

How or Why does an addict of one of the most addictive (and potentially lethal under the right circumstances/chemistry) drugs manage to stay alive while his younger cousin is felled by cancer? I tell you friends, it really seems there is no justice in the world, and certainly now less joy to the world as well.

RIP Taylor Negron. You shall be missed

"Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me..." -- Jill jackson Miller and Sy Miller, songwriters (1955)

As we approach the holidazed and confused season this year, there is more turmoil than ever before on planet Earth, and no superheroes or adventerous Time Lord to bail us out.

Let us work together to make a positive difference, to give people back the responsibility for being the creative force of their lives from the uncaring hands of governments.

Let it begin with each one of us, here and now...

Whatever holidays you celebrate this year, may they be merry, bright, snow white, and please say a prayer for peace in 2015 and beyond.

Changing your grades = Computer Fraud? Seriously?!?

News update from the Northern Rockies bureau of Channel 69 ASSwitness News...

What Matthew Broderick's characters did in both WarGames and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, changing grades via the computer, apparently constitutes computer fraud now. Seriously?!?

So claim authorities in Rexburg, Idaho, home of Ricks College, now known as Brigham Young University-Idaho...

Authorities charged former student Jacob Mahonri Espinal with two counts of computer fraud and one count of grand theft for allegedly altering his transcipt and obtaining $7,000. worth of academic scholarships.

As of Nov. 19, the 24-year-old remained in the Madison County Jail on $50,000 bond after being charged Nov. 9, with a preliminary hearing set for Nov. 20.

Investigators say Espinal was a student employee with access to a computer system that allowed him to change his status from being on academic probation to being a straight-A student, and he apparently sent that altered transcript to BYU's main campus in Provo, Utah, as well as to the LDS Business College and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

==========================================================
11/20: Additional story info from the Rexburg Standard Journal not featured in the Ap wire story:

According to court records, computer crimes in the State of Idaho include knowingly accessing a computer, a computer system or network for the purposes of fraud or theft.

Espinal, a former document processor and graduation specialist at BYU-Idaho's Student Records and Registrations Office, posted an associates degree in science he did not earn, changed his academic standing from probation to good, and gave himself straight As.

Espinal told police that he was failing most of his classes and the changes allowed him to stay in school.

As a result of his changes, he was also awarded nearly $7,000 in scholarship funds, $5,000 of which was actually distributed and used.

Police were contacted by BYU-I student records and registration employees who found discrepancies in Espinal's transcript, according to the police report.

According to the police report, Espinal made these changes over a four semester period, or two years.

“Although my action was driven by a good cause. I understand that I made a mistake and broke the trust of my school and law,” Espinal said in a written statement submitted to the court.

Goodbye, Thomas Louis Magliozzi (1937-2014)

For those of you who don't recognize the name right away, think of the tall bearded guy who loved his '63 Dodge Dart that got totalled by a snow plow, and the AMC Ambassador (The sleek black beauty) that younger brother Raymond condemned to the crusher... "Unencumbered by the thought process."... "Don't drive like my brother!"...

Yeppers, those Americans of Italian-Bostonian heritage, what turned a local call-in show on Boston University's station, WBUR (in their fair city, Cambridge), into National Public Radio's most popular show to date: Car Talk.

The last all new show was recorded in 2012, yet the show still draws audiences in repackaged reruns...

Now we know why they stopped to smell the cappuccino...

Tom Magliozzi, inventor of the commercial do-it-yourself garage and talk show host, died Monday at 77 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Ray said in his statement to the media, recounting a favorite comedic hook of the show, "Turns out he wasn't kidding ... He really couldn't remember last week's puzzler!"

-------------------------------------------------------

Later on that day, after posting this blog entry, I had to get $720 worth of new brake pads, front calipers and rotors, and one rear rotor replaced. (Yes, gbcplmissoula , I really did have mechanical problems on my car. A $234 filter and fluid flush last month brought my transmission back from the dead for the moment... F'd up Fall or Adventures in Car Repairs 2011 )

The mechanic said I'd smell burning brakes for a bit because they were coated in cosmoline, and I recounted how Tom & Ray mentioned cosmoline on the show as being the infamous coating on all those surplus jeeps from WW II. We had a good chat about Tom and Ray, too.

Unfortunately, some people like my brother-in-law have no sense of humor, and couldn't stand Tommy's infectious laugh, which most shall greatly miss.

Bust this, Discovery... Sayonara!

I am greatly upset by the announcement by Jamie and Adam at the end of Thursday night's season finale of MythBusters that the M7/Build Team of Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara had been essentially fired from the program for next season.

Whether Jamie came up with this hair-brain scheme on his own or was talked into it by the production company and/or Discovery Communications, we do not yet know.

The way it came down was very sad. The "2014 season finale" was actually filmed, and broadcast in Austrailia and Europe, in 2012; the only change being the updated voiceover, and the updated ending to reflect their being let go. (But if you watch it on Hulu, it has the original 2012 script!)

Until this epic fail is corrected, I will be boycotting all programs and channels underwritten by Discovery Communications, including OWN, TLC, Animal Planet, Destination America, Science and American Heroes Channel (formerly Military Channel). I strongly urge my fellow MB fans to do the same, and let them know we will not accept them fucking with our favorite shows!!!

As much as I love 19 and Counting, Deadliest Catch, Welcome to Sweetie Pie's, et.al. I cannot, in good conscience, let them do this to three of the reasons I love MB, especially Kari, who worked for Jamie since Beyond Productions Ltd. first brought cameras to M5 in 2002 to film the pilot episodes.

Sayonara, Discovery... your myth has been Busted! Busted! Busted!

UPDATE, DEC 2015: After a serious decline of ratings during both halves of the 2015 season, Discovery finally cancelled MythBusters. The final season starts next month. And as to why the Build Team was let go, Discovery did not want to pay them what they are worth.

UPDATE, JAN 2016: announced on the behind-the-scenes season premiere, the Build Team will return for a retrospective episode. (Aired March 5, 2016 after the series finale, which wasn't the last new episode to air!!! "Duct Tape - The Return", featuring the duct tape trebuchet seen in the season preview, somehow got shelved by Discovery, so it could air March 6 over on The Science Channel, which has been airing MB reruns all along.)

UPDATE, MAR 2016: and to add insult to injury..... Science announces one of its new series is a reality competition show, "Search for the next MythBusters"!!!, with competitors to be judged by folks connected with the old show, so look to see our Fab Five selecting their cheaper replacements. I thought only Disney went that low with outsourcing...

Another one gone too soon...

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences tweeted: "Genie, you're free."

Pam Dawber (Mindy): "I am completely and totally devastated. What else can be said?"

The greatest improvisational comedian of his generation (and a darn fine Oscar-winning actor too), Robin Williams is dead at 63, apparently of suicide by asphixia.

Heaven must be laughing like crazy tonight, as Robin and Jonathan Winters hold court together.

He shall be greatly missed.
