The Virtual Symposium Returns: Let’s Pick A Topic!

Our ninth virtual symposium (Participants List For The Ninth Virtual Symposium Body ImageImagery) garnered more contributions than any previous edition. Once again, we picked up several new contributors, thanks largely to previous participants pimping the symposium on their blogs. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who promoted it!

Ready for the tenth? Let’s pick one topic from those listed below, and on the morning of Sunday, July 26 I’ll provide a central landing page which will have links to all contributors’ offerings. No matter which topic we ultimately choose, I hope folks will warp it as wildly as befits their personalities. Essays, fantasies, poems, image collages, other artwork – the more offbeat the interpretation, the better!

On the morning of Sunday, July 26, I’ll start a placeholder post, and as participants put their contributions up, I’ll look for their notifications and incorporate links into that central post. Participants are encouraged to note in their posts that they’re part of a communal effort and provide a link to the central page (adding that link retroactively, after I’ve created the central page, would be very helpful): Doing so allows someone who stumbles on one individual’s blog item to enjoy as many of our pieces as he/she wants… and further strengthens a sense of virtual community.

A note: While we’ll accept contributions all day, this site’s problems with links going live should come as a surprise to no one. The earlier folks post their contributions, the sooner, it seems, links go live.

Regarding the symposium itself, the only two rules are: A ) Please post as early on the chosen day as possible, to allow for maximum exposure (and, quite frankly, so I’m not glued to my desk all day), and B ) the posts should be entirely original, as opposed to commenting on other posts from the topic. Ideally, posts should be created beforehand, and put on the site on the designated day. (The comments sections, of course, would be fair game!)

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing. They should definitely let me know, once they’ve posted, that they’ve done so in the comments section on the blog: I get those notifications faster than through the site email system.

And… this is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons or bling awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on July 26 I can link to their posts. Oh, and consider this permission – nay, encouragement – to the symposium and link back to this post! I’d like to make sure folks interested in participating have the opportunity to do so. , , – and remember, pimping is a great way to influence your topic of choice.

Electioneering is perfectly legal, here… so feel free to leave reactions, persuasive arguments, and snide asides (about topics, but NOT bloggers) in the comments section below.

So what topic will we use for the next virtual symposium? I’ve listed four – I think they’re general enough that, whichever one we end up choosing, most folks should be comfortable offering reactions. At any rate, here are the choices. Feel free to electioneer in the comments, below, for any you find particularly compelling.

Voting for the topic will close at end-day on Sunday, July 19.

that vote -- newbie participants are always welcome!

Thank you in advance for your participation! And yes, reading and enjoying counts as participation. Pick that topic!

1. Yeah, it's undefined enough that if people stretch themselves, they could bring some amazing interpretations to it!

2. Don't be so sure: I've seen some interesting upsets in the past. The only sure-thing vote I've seen here was the "Food" topic... and tha was after it had lost twice!

3. Meh... I'd just as soon not read 50 rants about the site. There's enough to write about regarding technology without using this place as a focus...

Doors, Bridges and may I add gates?

On slut is a boring topic--someone writes and whines about it most every day.

If you would like to add "gates" to doors and bridges, you are certainly encouraged to do so! Heck, I may throw it into the topic just to broaden it a bit...

All right, you've talked me into it!

As for slut being a boring topic... I dunno, actually being a slut isn't boring, or so I've heard... and I think it would be fun to hear from sluts, wanna-be sluts, non-sluts, and even an occasional slut shamer (for balance, although I don't endorse the position) on the subject!

Welcome to the symposium... glad you're joining us!

For what it's worth, I've seen some of the best posts come from topics people didn't vote for, or felt would be challenging... and rest assured, if a runner-up topic gets enough votes, you'll see it again...

Quite interesting choices this month:

Travel/International Intrigue is out - did enough of virtual travel guide posts lately and need a break from "traveling".

Technology is out too - fed up with it on global level. Thinking of disconnecting TV services and canceling membership with Arclight.

On “Slut” - tickles my fancy and promises some fun with ancients.

Doors and/or Bridges and/or Gates - could be fun too.

As a result, I'm torn between Sluts and Doors.

(Hope, mumbling is allowed while selecting a topic?)

You wouldn't know what to do with a slut?

I am sure you would have no shortage of volunteers to offer guidance..

In all seriousness, if "slut" does win, or if it is chosen in the future, I hope you'd participate... very often the topics that challenge us produce the most self-revelatory contributions... and some of the most exciting ones to read!

Hell, writing about not knowing how you feel about "slut," if done in a considered fasino, could be a great essay in and of itself...

Regardless of which wins, I look forward to your contribution!

Yeah, there's no obvious "gimmie" this month (see: "Food"). I really enjoy it when several topics are in contention!

Flip a coin... if you're happy with what comes up, vote for it. If not, vote for the other.

And... isn't it interesting to note that regardless of whether you choose "sluts" to be heads or tails, both are fitting?

Most versatile, those sluts...

I can't think f anything interesting to say about "sluts."

But ah, technology! I don't even think of AdultFriendFinder as technology. There is so much more to consider there . . . !
It is a rich topic, and it seems to be making a mid-campaign push!

It's a pretty broad topic, isn't it? This was one of the better mixes offered, and I strongly suspect you'll see a lot of the runners-up offered again in the months to come...

Incidentally, the first time I checked the results and saw a write-in vote, there were exactly 42 votes cast. Infinite Probability Drives, anyone?

Doors/bridges/gates is my vote, you won't be surprised HG.
I think 'slut' would have been my choice otherwise, and many did it :
interesting fight between topics, one of wide-range blogging, perhaps inconspicuous
and eerr ... say ... the basic game of the average A2F subscriber ?
Yet I'm sure that if one wins in july, the other will win the polls another time !

I enjoy when topics compete for a bit... and all four potential themes this month have their backers! I'm sure as well that which ever one doesn't win will crop up again among the choices...

I would hope that ANY topic the blogosphere chooses could be interpreted in a ton of different ways! Some of the most successful posts are those which bloggers deliberately warp -- to wonderful effect.

We are looking forward to your contributing again!

Apparently On Slut won so I'll not be posting. Boring Boring Boring. I think the only people who should be allowed a vote are those that actually WRITE and post for the symposiums.

I've opened up voting to everyone as a sort of "dessert first" inducement: By giving folks a chance to participate in choosing the topic, I hope to induce them to contribute pieces. (I also happen to like dessert.)

Some voters do contribute, some don't... some don't but are good about posting comments on other people's blogs, and since the point of this is to build community, that's a perfectly valid form of participation.

(Astute readers have noted that I make a distinction between contributors and participants: Contributors are those who offer a post, and participants are those who either read or comment. Every writer needs readers!)

Sometimes people will look over a few symposiums before jumping in... I want them coming back to vote, if it makes contributing easier...

As for sitting this one out -- contributing is never mandatory, of course: Nothing about the symposium is. But I'd like to offer a thought: I've seen a number of people who weren't comfortable with a given topic say they weren't... and then come up with some damned fine contributions.

Hell, even talking about why you don't like the topic would be fair: It's not an easy topic, and it's controversial... which is why it's GREAT for a symposium.

Hope you'll at least mull contributing... and that you'll read the other contributions. If nothing else, please come back next month and vote for another topic!

I may participate after all... on one hand the topic of choice is distasteful to me. Namely: It is a word I never use. I have never called anybody such and the one time a bf called me that it stopped sex cold. No guarantees.

I hope you will contribute... it is, as you note, a very charged word, and I hesitated before offering it as a topic.

It is a word that is used cruelly... but it is also a word that people who have embraced their own sexuality have attempted to take back. I strongly suspect we will hear from many sides of it -- those who embrace their sluttiness, those who enjoy their sexuality but reject the word, those who can't even consider the word, and those who aren't arsed one way or another, as long as the food is good.

However you choose to explore it will be very welcome.

Your part is finished... now it's my turn to collect the links, post 'em early on Sunday, July 26 (eastern U.S. time -- yes, provincial, I know) while you revel in the accolades of your fellow bloggers!

Thank you for joining the virtual symposium: Hope you'll come back for future editions! We hold one once a month or so: Watch my blog, as in about three weeks I'll put up a new round of suggested topics for the blogosphere to select from.
