We're here, we're sluts, get used to it.

On Slut Is The Topic For The Tenth Virtual Symposium

Sheela na gigs are figurative carvings of naked women displaying an exaggerated vulva. Such carvings are said to ward off death and evil.

We're here, we're sluts, get used to it.- by Bill

Bend to the oars, you lousy whores, None is bigger than mine.
She hoisted her garments for me to see all
Overload by spectators during a wedding
Gloria! Gloria! You were my queen and I was your fool

She screamed and she hollered, and tried to recoil
When I pulled out Old Satan, and went boring for oil.
The pup yelped; the slut barked and leaped furiously at the offender
You have to pay attention, he says a lot. You have to know your place.

Tis no less, I tell you, for the bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon.
She began to gently run her hands over Little Red’s creamy white buttocks and thighs

Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates

Tits and clits! Tits and clits! That’s what all this is about! That’s all they are ever after!
It’s a harsh and difficult thing for a woman to go to sleep, alone. Without a prick, I mean.

Thank you Pet! You know, I did a lot of mining for this and it started to get me down. I got just a tiny glimpse of what it's like to hear that constant double standard refrain, slut, slut, slut., that constant fucking put down. It really brings you down. I thought I knew that already going in- it's not an argument that's new to me. But it's very different to be subjected to it relentlessly.

The slut chorus was helpful in that way. Like a Greek chorus.

Another great post from the house of Kzoo. I knew that I did not want to go mining for this topic, as it would infuriate me and break connective inspirations. Thank you for doing that dirty work. The slut chorus is great. I want to hear it sung until the word "slut" ceases to have any meaning at all and disappears into oblivion.
Thank you...
It did begin to depress me. Some of it turned out funny anyway, but the aggregate is defiance. I loved the Slut Walk and the walkers. There's another word that comics overused relentlessly to wear it down, and I approved of that too. I know it's open to heated debate, but I don't think we talk about hate and repression by banning words. If you can't even speak or write the words the abuse and oppression are hidden from view, locked in the closet where it can't be seen or heard.

Thanks, nightsoul. I tried to represent the dichotomy, that hypocritical double standard that wears away at you and erodes the spirit, and finish with a more personal view. It ain't over yet! Women have to stick to their principles.

Me too, but the terms are sort of interchangeable, like you said. He was a fucking poet and an artist and women were hot for him- of course he was an asshole. That kind of incessant attention and adulation could fuck up all but the stoutest of characters.

It is not a word I am comfortable with and I don't really understand the reclamation of the word. It was a word that was once benign and may be one day again. It is still evolving. I have to admit this post was a bit over my head at times if I am honest about it. But wow, a lot of hard work and thought went into this one B.

I am determined this time to read every single post and to comment and to respond to comments left on my post if it kills me. I plan to get caught up from last time too. I don't know what's wrong with me sometimes B.
I'm not comfortable with it as a pejorative either. But you will surely have seen what the repetition of a word in a certain context can do. Conservatives have very successfully libeled and re-labelled the word 'liberal' as a slur. Dan Savage brilliantly assigned a new meaning to the name Santorum. A lot of our slang has entered mainstream vernacular from undercultures, originating among gay men or drug users and it's meaning subtly or not so subtly softened and altered. 'Freaks' was entirely an insult at one time but a generation of dope smoking hippies wore it with pride.

Sorry about it, but long posts with rich vocabulary gets me lost in the way.
Your prose(and PD's) seems magnificent, though, and illustrations accurate.
About the first one ... the widest vagina recorded is Anna Swan's, a Scottish,
with 19 inches in diameter - did you know that ?
For slutwalks ... that cop in Toronto saying "women shouldn't dress like sluts"
was an absolute moron, and the event started in reaction is just great.
In fact I thought I'll read more contributions in the symposium devoted
to "slut dressings" - thanks for having thought of it to both of you.

I stopped counting Doors references at about eight: Morrison & Co. are longtime favorites, and you mined some moderately obscure recordings (the group's cover of "Gloria!") for your poem...

and...

You will never again need to convince me that sampling ISN'T art! It most certainly is! You and Dr. Dre, man... I see no difference at all!

(For the concerned: Relax. This is all covered under the "Fair Use" doctrine. And that's before we get into tangential citations such as Feist Publications, Inc., v. Rural Telephone Service Co. Just chill and enjoy the creativity and effort here.)

Even before I took the poem as a whole, I had a great time playing Memory Jog (the most exercise I've gotten in a few days) with your references. And when my memory developed a nasty stitch which prevented me from moving on, I loved looking up your sources.

F'rinstance, the "bend to your oars" song (female readers: Do not do not do not look this song up. Seriously. You'll break the Internet. It's TOO slutty.) led to Ed Cray's book "The Erotic Muse: American Bawdy Songs," which is going to be my next secondhand bookstore grail.

But -- damn, man! -- this flarf poem is not a research effort: It's an editing effort. And when I went back to it for a second (of what turned out to be multiple) reading(s), I saw the effort that went into making it flow seamlessly and coherently. It works not just as a literary exercise, but as a cry from the heart. Amazing.

Thank you for bringing the world of flarf to the blogosphere here. It's a hell of a lot of fun to read-- and would be a hell of a lot of fun to play with. But by my lights, you've staked your claim to the form, and I am going to back off and just admire your efforts...

unless folks feel flarf should be a potential symposium topic?

I can't remember the name of his challenger, but William S. Burroughs was once accosted that "You're using other peoples' words" and Burroughs replied "It's OK. They were done with them."
Of course, Burroughs also once, upon meeting some diva in Italy who offered up her hand to be kissed, announced "Aw, I'd rather kiss her cunt." How can you not like the guy?

Thanks, HG! I still think it's as much or more fun for the writer than it is for the reader, unless he makes a game out of it and searches sources, like you did. That's pretty flattering! But I don't think blogtown is especially enthralled with flarf. You recall the last time I played with flarf- my loyal watchers were commenting "Gee, that's very nice, but what about your dog? We haven't heard about Gracie in a while." and "How's Gracie doing? Sure do miss her!"

I can sure understand that. That word can be a pretty vicious slur, and young people throw it around as frequently as "like" without a thought, or a clue, to what it does to their target. Amazingly, so do a lot of "adults".

I wish it would die along with "faggot", "cunt" and a few others. Although bullies will always find a verbal way to hit their targets. As much as I'm having trouble adjusting to "Caitlyn", I appreciate that she said to sling those words toward her instead of a young person because she can take it. I can take it. I can also dropkick someone, if I have to.

Sort of related:
Last night I was reading #theEmptyChair article in NY magazine.
There was one comment that says it all.
"You know, a woman can be not believed for 30 years. But it takes one man? To make a joke about it?"
We women may be finally, thanks to women's rights activism and feminist discourse, in control of our body [politically speaking] and free to do with it as we please. But we still can't control our image, or make our voice heard. People will see what they want to see, no matter what. And most of the time they are not listening, either.

I think it takes a lot- and a lot of time- to turn a culture in a different direction. I hope you're right that women are getting political control- I wax hopeful and wane discouraged on that myself. But it's shouting out and gaining political power that will cause real change, and economic power will accomplish that. Keep hollering, and fight back. Wealth and power doesn't ever concede willingly- you have to take it.
